I hope it is safe. I went to that party in 1977. Was a great time and I hope it stays safe.

Ah yes. There's nothing like a little reminder of how terribly at risk we all are to get the new year off to a great start.

    Thank you, USA.

goddog: Went there many times in the pre-security days and it was a wild scene. But with the cold weather, crowds and security now it's definitely for young people only. I'd rather just hang out in a warm apartment with the girlfriend and friends. Guess I'm getting "old".

Okay, so let me get this straight: the place has been gutted and the shops replaced with the family friendly business. Then the "softer" family crowd moved in for the event. But the beginning of the article says we owe the lack of crime and terror to the security forces?

Is this an ad or an article? Seems to me this is the kind of fear propaganda they use to sell us cameras, contracts and body scanners. Goodbye tax dollars! Hello big brother!

No backpacks? Well where the crap do I put the baby formula and diapers?

Manhole covers are sealed. Counter-snipers are stationed on secret rooftops. Officers carry beeper-sized radiation detectors. Plainclothes officers are stationed in the pens with the crowds, along with a uniformed presence and undercover officers. Bomb-sniffing dogs are on site. Purses are searched. Checkpoints are set up and perimeters are created using concrete blocks. Passing vehicles are checked for safety.

I'm no security expert, but wouldn't it be prudent to, like, not tell the whole world that?

It's an article written specifically about the security situation in Times Square. It's not an article talking about the event itself. The only one trying to sell fear is the media, and the only ones buying are people such as yourself.

I wouldn't take a baby into that crowd, so maybe no backpacks for baby formula will not really be a problem.

Superlib, what part of my criticism made you think I was buying the fear? What part made you think I thought it was an ad for the event? Are you drunk by any chance?
