So America is still a torture nation, and we will continue to be one. Opps, I told everyone we changed when we voted Obama.

    Oops.

Looks like Obama's plan to ship all the Gitmo terrorists to Blue States didn't work out.

There's a retired guy in Texas with a pretty big smile on his face I would think right now.

skip's plan is to ship all them to their US supporters homes, to be housed, fed, and taken care of those that have believed them to be completely innocent.

"We"? So you now claim to be an American? Doubt it very much based on your past posts (which we of course can't access), and especially after your "petrol cars" comment in the other 'Obama/efficient cars' article...

The attitude of the democrats seems to have changed since they have gained the upper hand. This talk about "not wanting any of Guantanamo’s detainees sent to the United States to stand trial or serve prison sentences" seems to be at odds with all the hand wringing that happened while GW was in power. As I see it, there are two choices to be made. Either the US attempts to recover the moral high ground by at least offering these internees the minimum level of legal rights (that the US previously offered John Lind - the American taliban) or it "renditions" these detainees off to other less squemish countries such as Egypt, where they will no doubt be offered full legal rights before being tortured and executed. Now I know that both of these options are rather severe for the wilting violents who make up both sides of the political spectrum in the US, however, a decision has to be made because Gitmo as is has become a foreign policy albatross that stands in the way of addressing the big issues. So which is it, minimal legal rights (with the possibility that these internees will be found guilty and executed under the mandate of the United States government) or making this problem go away by havng US lackies in the Middle East slot these internees in order to gain Brownie points with the Obama administration.

“We don’t want them around,” said Majority Leader Harry Reid. Ok, ok, so why don't we just execute them all? A firing squad, let them all become martyrs for their god?

sending them back to their country sounds ridiculous to me.

So the issue still stands, prisoners are in Cuba, the world doesn't want them there, but nobody wants to take them. Let the senators that want the prison closed draw straws to see who gets the honor of housing them...alternativly we could put them in with the general prison population, I hear Pelican Bay has a lovely exercise yard.

Gitmo needs to stay open. Their are hundreds of thousands of muslim fanatics ready to attack us at anytime. It has been made to be safe, high standard and the prisoners are treated with respect.

Keep it open, Bush was right, it is needed.

USNinJapan2 there are more than one poster who says one post they aren't American, then another they voted for Obama.

Hey, the senators are protecting themselves for the 2010 elections, I munderstand that.

So be it. But it will happen. < :-)

USinJapan2, my nationality has no relation to my opinions, unless you think all American's must have right-wing viewpoints? I thought you, of all people would like to see freedom of thought...forced or otherwise.

Here is my question: WHAT is the status of these captives? Are they prisoners of war? Do the Geneva Conventions apply? If the US is to regain the moral high ground a process has to take place. Either they are brought into the US and tried so a judge or jury can definitively establish whether they are terrorists or not, OR they have to be returned to their countries of origin. As long as they are held in limbo the Bush justice is in effect, and the constitution is in the toilet. Harry Reid: you don't want them on US soil, you should not have captured and brought them to this side of the Atlantic. Now deal with it, don't sweep it under the carpet.

Well you have military tribunals as another option...

    Do the Geneva Conventions apply?

No, they don't. We could shoot them dead, as was done in WW2.

Hey, why don't we just let them out in Cuba?

They'd probably be treated than my relatives there.
