Stating that attacks in this particular area are uncommon may be the conventional thing to say, but it does not help the situation one iota.

< And you could say the same thing about of your comment.>

Long term solutions are leaning toward the use of rare earth magnets integrated into artificial seaweed and reefs. While one of the most effective deterrents is the use of an electrical current pack, many surfers are using them now. It's a small battery pack with a pulse emitter and trailing wire. The only down side is that you can't have it turned on at all times because the battery drains quickly. Specific color pattern decals on surfboards, and wetsuits with the same color patterns have also shown good results. Lastly, avoid wearing certain colors, Mic Fanning no longer surfs in Yellow colors. The Hawaiians have a saying, it's called "yummy yellow"

What does it mean when a beach is closed? If someone wishes to take their chances, can they be legally stopped?

< That's up to to local city and lifeguards, most of the time you can go out at your own risk but I've also seen people ticketed or even arrested for ignoring the signs. >
