What a dreadful way to go. Hate the thought of being diner for a shark.
Sadly however the article has some parts wrong
There was actually a fatal shark attack in Queensland last week.

My God. Can you imagine being one of the 4 or 5 who are left? Seeing that happen right in front of your eyes, and wondering if you are next? Roughly 18% chance of it being you? I think I would literally walk on water to get out of there!
RIP surf dude.

Sad to say but most people don't know about sharks, attacks are usually mistaken identities. Sharks are actually rather harmless and most hate the human taste.
Sharks love baby-rays and turtles but got bad eye-sight. So a swimming cosy has the same shape as a baby-ray, hence why swimmers are taken on the hip.
Ditto why swimming wear and suits now got neon stripes on them it is done to break up the image that a shark can see.
Reason why surfers are taken on the limbs, turtle image of 4 limbs extending from a body/board.
Now a shark will grab and pull and while he does so he will taste and let go but it is the pull that does the damage.
Now I have dived plenty and got multiple licences, sharks are no worry but are attracted to shapes and glints(fish swimming) from oxygen bottles, regulators, etc.
So they get interested and start to circle, but will soon loose interest. Also dolphins are the natural enemies of sharks(seen quiet a few kills) and our fins go like dolphins up/down(fish goes sideways).
If shark is close by flow flat on the surface limbs tucked in close, now sharks got the mouth underneath and either need to turn upside town or be upright(out of the water) to take a bite on extended limbs.
Also know where sharks like to swim = follow boats/ships as they drop much waste refuse, meats, etc.
HTH.

It's Me,
Only one problem with your theory, how do sharks test to see if something is part of their diet. They bite it, and when a big enough shark takes a sample its all over. Luckily shark attacks are rare but you still need to be careful about when and where you go swimming, surfing. People seem to forget about this sometimes for example surfing around seal colonies (asking for trouble) or swimming near people fishing (equally stupid). At the end of the day its the person getting in the waters responsibility to be careful of there surroundings after all a shark is just doing what it does naturally and that is eating

Spidapig24.
As I said bite and taste while pulling than let go = major damage to what they sampled. And I agree way more worried about dolphins(many reports of attacks on humans, no confirmed savings), scorpion-fish, Moray-eels, etc than sharks while diving.
As you said when we enter the ocean we also enter their territory and thus are the trespassers and aggressors.
Agree shark-attacks are very rare given the millions of people in the oceans now annually.

In short don't look like potential prey.

As an experienced diver who loves sharks I suggest that surfers, divers and other water enthusiasts refrain from wearing black or grey wetsuits while swimming in waters known for sharks. Black and grey are the colors of seals and other preferred prey for sharks. Bright colors (green, orange and pink) have been known to receive less attention----not prevent, mind you!----from sharks. RIP surfer and best wishes to the people who had to witness the carnage.

ocean is whose territory? you might as well say the land is the territory of cockcroaches, and dont you dare use pesticide.....kill the shark that caused the damage and a few more for wasting time and money in the effort. This sort of attitude is why the average fisherman lost his job. All these theories on how to avoid getting eaten by a shark-well here's another one, kill it first.

Wow what a great idea, to save people getting attacked by sharks, kill all the sharks. Lets extend that, to save people from car crashes ban cars, to save people from hurting themselves or other with knives ban knives. Lets also introduce predictive executions, if you are believed to be capable of murder then just execute them now and save the hassle of waiting for the crime to happen.
Great logic there illsayit! Maybe if you realised that by getting in the water you are entering an area where you are at risk and taking precautions then you can minimise your risk. Or you could do your suggestion and just kill everything that poses a risk hey.
