I am now officially embarrassed to be an American (not really;-).

This entire black friday thing is completely idiotic.

Idiotic but very entertaining! Black Friday at Walmart is better than pro-wrestling!

That's odd. I was always told that Disney World is the happiest place on Earth.

From the LATimes:
Yikes! Dueling with handguns over Wal-Mart bling! Methinks a large portion of the population has lost its sense of proportion.

Where is spirit of the holidays? Stories like these just make me sad at how consumerism has hijacked what should be a time of caring, sharing, and showing appreciation for all we are lucky to have. Nutjobs like these are gonna just give TSA the opportunity to expand their business.

ben4short
Godan, not sure of the connection with the TSA but I am sure of this: these folks are not "nutjobs." They are just your plain old run-of-the-mill overconsumptive Americans who are doing an excellent job (and will ultimately succeed) in bringing America to its knees. Who needs Islamic Jihadists?

Pepper-spray? Lame! Didn't she have a Taser gun?
It's too bad she got away, she needs to be pepper-sprayed and slapped upside the head.

Why don't stores just get a head start on the competition and begin these sales earlier in November? That way shoppers wouldn't be all bunched up at the doors like this on the same day nationwide.

Ben - Just thought it won't be too long before people gotta go through security checks before entering a Walmart. America, Land of the Free?

Pepper Spray is a big problem these days. Now if they are willing to prosecute this woman, then naturally those police officers who used pepper spray on protesters should be locked up too.
It's Black Friday but everybody is seeing red. They should limit Black Friday sales to Online only. That way if they can't get in, they'll bust their own keyboard or router.

Game on! Woohooo!

Land of all greed, and the home of deranged?

This tragedy could have been prevented. Pepper spray face guards were just $9.99 in aisle seven.

BWAHAHAHA, wow this is hilarious, things are expensive ...wish i was there lol

smithinjapan
At least there weren't too many people gunning it out over the sales, and the stampedes seem to have lessened. I kind of agree with NetNinja on this one -- perhaps they can limit the sales to online orders and/or call-ins.

Better than pro-wrestling or cage-fighting. :(
Glad that Thanks-giving and Black Friday don't exist outside the states.

"POVERTY" written all over.

Every year, Black Friday serves as a warning to American citizens as to what life would be like in metropolitan areas should the country face a real national disaster, such as a famine, hyper-inflation or a collapse of the banking system. The warning: many of your fellow citizens are just a few IQ points above the animals, so be prepared for the worst and be grateful for the 2nd Amendment.
3
Farmboy
Please don't insult the animals. How often do they pepper spray each other at Wal-mart?

Ah yes! Tis the season to be merry!! Ho! Ho! Merry g Taser? Knife and gun fights? Over a stupid X Box?? Mexico should close it's northern border ASAP before this violence spills over from the USA!!

"POVERTY" written all over.
Well, that's an interesting point. I've visited a lot of places where people are poor, but in most, I haven't found such a lack of civilization and readiness to do violence as demonstrated in this article. Some places are much worse, of course, but I don't think it's the poverty itself that makes people this way. The violence had to be carefully fostered somehow...

Elbuda Mexicano
Smith and Net@ if they limited to online sales we would have no crazy violent news to report!! Do you think corporate America would want to miss this chance at worldwide free advertisements?? Hohoho!! Merry free for all everybody!!

This being my first holiday season back in the states, I never thought of going for Black Friday no matter how cheap the goods were.
I now live close a mall and all of other shopping stores, but I never considered going to a Black Friday event because of the crowds; all the pushing and struggling just to get inside the store for products that may wind up not available as advertised.

Guess you never experienced the "lucky present" madness that takes place on Jan. 2nd in Japan.

You must have not been there in 2001 when a woman got trampled to death during a "lucky present" event at a department store in Ichikawa.

Consumerism at its finest.

Bebert: "...be grateful for the second amendment".
Not at all. People should be grateful this woman didn't have an uzi or a rocket launcher instead of pepper-spray, and likewise she's lucky she didn't get shot for what she did. There have been numerous similar situations in which shooting deaths have occured, including last year's Walmart black Friday rush, I believe.

Best time for Christmas shopping, if you're really determined to save money, is December 26 and/or the weekend following Christmas. (It's also the worst time to be returning a purchase as the lines go around the block.)

Lame, uncultured, uneducated, rednecks behaving badly.

calm down
could that happen at Daimaru ?

Get your America hatred on (it's really not much better than the behavior of the crazed shoppers in the article). These incidents never happen in other countries.

Farmboy
Now you've gone and hurt my feelings. This happened in LA, where we rednecks, who ALWAYS wait patiently in line, fear to tread.

These shoppers are mostly in their 20s and 30s; they have been devastated by the Pelosi-Obama economy.

I thought must-have items were things like warm clothes, shoes, food, light bulbs, soap etc - silly me!

Good to know that not only the USA has a stupid day to go hog wild my dear DentShop! Boxing Day?? No idea what that is! Please explain.

The same or similar happens with the January sales in London, especially in the expensive department stores.
0
Elbuda Mexicano
OMG! I can not believe this could happen in LONDON!! Zichi please tell us, because I can not imagine rich shoppers acting like animals at Harrod's, really I can not.
3
zichi
Elbuda,
well, not only rich people. The prices of luxury items are very cheap, like fur coats, china tableware, bags. Some people camp out for a week before hand to be at the doors when they open. You have to be tough!

Cant they just shop online..

One shopper? All this over "one" shopper? How many "millions" of shoppers hit the stores on black friday?

Haha, that's what Cyber Monday is for!
Still, it's great for people I know who have "insider connections" - just walk-in, walk-out, same heavily discounted deals without the waiting all night in line.
Like for example, a 47-inch Sony LCD with Google TV, normally around US$1000. Friend showed up at 7:30am and got in before the store opened, bypassed the line of people outside, picked the LCD at leisure, paid for it for $350 less the moment the store opened at 8am, then online from a vendor site, a coupon for $300 more. So a $1000 47-inch LCD, let alone Sony with Google TV, for only $450 with no hassle. Actually, the biggest hassle was getting that big thing in and out of the car. Game the system, folks.

I did the "Black Friday" thing....once. That was in Seattle, Lynwood to be exact, and I will never do it again. Some bargins were to be found but it was a madhouse. Long lines...grumpy people, I will pay the few extra bucks just to avoid such lunacy.

Black Friday is a gimmick just like all the other "Holiday Sales." The difference is: Instead of sucking you in slowly through the year, they do it in one big rush on a Friday and Cyber Monday. If we just give love on HOLIDAYS every shopping day would be a "black Friday.or cyber Monday."

If I'm going to do shopping for electronics, I'm going to most likely do it online. Sure it may cost in S&H depending on how fast or slow I want it (it might even be free), but at least I won't have to wait in line or deal with misguided selfish people having shoppers rage.
