I'd be rather disappointed in the NSA if they couldn't crack web encryption. Seems like something a self-respecting intelligence agency should be able to do.

so the next terrorist need not even board a plane, they can just hack the communications beacon on the plane or other nefarious actions. (plot from Sneakers movie regarding an NSA cracked code breaker). Not good in this case when life imitates art

"The potential for abuse of such extraordinary capabilities for surveillance, including for political purposes, is considerable." -ProPublica
Exactly.

And it may only be a matter of time before a criminal organization (or some rogue elements inside NSA, GCHQ) discovers and exploits these same vulnerabilities theoretically left in place so the NSA could combat such adversaries.
Well-Done NSA

Pretty cool stuff. The NSA is absolutely amazing.

The USA today looks a lot like Germany in 1934. The bill of rights has been trashed. The laws of the land are being ignored. All of this for the reason of "security and safety". Once a government takes power like this they do not let it go without fight. One day they will ask why did the Americans let the dictator take power? Perhaps it is already too late with the Constitution already being suspended.

At least it's not illegal when they used supercomputers. That's just like guessing - except with brute force calculation.

Considering how China's PLA has been having a field day with "western" corporate/defense/government hacking I'd sure hope spy agencies can break encryptions. It also allows them the ability to build better defenses.
Cyberwarfare is exactly like natural biological warfare. A virus infects the immune system the immune system learns to subdue the virus and then the virus evolves again to infect, and the immune system once again learns to subdue it... wash, rinse, repeat. That is just the way things are.
