I'm not entirely sure that the US or Russians feel that they require the Somalian "government's" blessing to act if and when necessary. If the Somalian "government" had a proper control over its own country, this maritime crime wave would never have happened in the first place. They should make an example of these pirates, because too much compromise will just encourage the others. When a crew is being held, one set of tactics is necessary, but when the pirates are on the open seas and can be properly identified - sink them

The poor, kind and gentle pirates say they only want a little money and never take lives, but the Russian sailor died from the unbearable stress of the situation, one source says. Who is responsible for his death?

His blood is on YOUR HANDS, thieving pirates! Anything to say now?

You should not be so hard on the Somalian government. Every nation has rogues in it that it has immense trouble getting rid of. These pirates are not sophisticated by our standards, but neither is the Somali government. But it stands that pirates have the ship and have for several days, and even we have no magic bullet for the situation.

We all know that they will act anyway. But far better to have mutual understanding and cooperation and the U.S. and Russians at least nodding to national sovereignty and showing respect. I respect the Somalis for admitting the problem and getting everything out in the open. --Cirroc

These ships sailing through that area should be armed. They should have a couple of trained security people traveling with them, people who understand how to use a deck position machine gun and high powered riffles. I just cant believe that they actually come up to the side of the ship. Can you image the turkey shoot it would be firing from a higher position on those small boats. Hell if I would give up!

Time to send in the SAS bods and snuff off the damned pirates. If the world doesn't deal with them using the only methods they comprehend, i.e brutality, then they'll be back to business as usual tommorow.

Keep the hijackers cornered and then turn it over to the Russians when they arrive.

    Let the Russians handle it.

Then make sure all future "pirates" know what's in store for them if they want to consider such entrepeneurorial adventures.

Question of cost and insurance, no? And can you imagine the sh1tstorm of media coverage if some guard on a merchant ship fired on a boat with children on board.

The Russians will fix them alright. We have seen how they have handled a few of these hostage situations recently, half of the hostages will end up dead and the ship destroyed.
