"the first Hispanic and third woman to serve on the high court"

She is surely smarter than any white man.

It's funny to follow the Republican frustration as she simply steps around their traps and doesn't allow herself to get pinned down. Clearly said Republicans are dealing with a superior intellect. Give it up, gents; she's getting in there so you may as well stop alienating yourselves even more.

Why not just answer the questions straight out? The Democrats will vote her on he Court no matter what she says. She could say she is the member of some racist organization (say like La Raza) and that wouldn't make a dimes worth of difference with the racists in the Democrat Party. Wait, she is a member of "The Race" isn't she... I see no reason for her to continue lying and saying that she doesn't base her judicial decisions on the race of the litigants (like in the Ricci case) or that she believes the Second Amendment is an individual right (as all other Consitutional rights are) when obviously she does not. Obama will have his wise - and racist - Latina on the Supreme Court.

    White male Republicans, right, smithinjapan?

What about Condi Rice? Is Sotomayor smarter than Condi Rice, a black female Republican?

    Altria

Good move. Wait til you get approved before banning guns!

Is Sotomayor smarter than Condi Rice, a black female Republican?

No way, Condi Rice is a genius. Sotomayer is a "Jenny from the Block" street-smart Latino woman, yo.

Wolfpack: "The Democrats will vote her on he Court no matter what she says. She could say she is the member of some racist organization (say like La Raza) and that wouldn't make a dimes worth of difference with the racists in the Democrat Party."

Yeah, maybe she should just talk about how 'the KKK is not that bad' like the Arizona Repub. dude, right? and whatever other group the racist lout was talking about in another statement.

    "White male Republicans, right, smithinjapan?"

I'm not talking about gender or ethnic background like you are clearly obsessed with, sarge. I'm talking about how this woman is easily outsmarted the people trying to get her to slip up and say something stupid that they can use against her. Like you, they are very much frustrated.

"What about Condi Rice? Is Sotomayor smarter than Condi Rice, a black female Republican?"

It would seem so, yes, though admittedly we saw quite a number of years of gaffes with Condi, and we have seen little yet of Sotomayer. Again, though, clearly you're interested solely on pointing out race and as such being mildly racist on this thread, whereas I couldn't care less what background the woman comes from, nor that she is a woman. I'm not sure why you're obsessed with 'white men', bud, but I recommend dropping it.

I actually watched this last night on the web. I actually was impressed with her. Still, should have just come out said what she where she stands on such issues, she is a shoe in. there is no way in hell she'd not get nominated. While I felt that the repubs were hard on her, which I think for such a position it shouldn't be a walk in the park, but I had to laugh at those dems. Man, the butt kissing that was going on. Rich white libs are becoming more comical than rich white conservatives.

Altria, I hope you are just trying to be funny. At least Sotomayor speaks two languages fluently.

Well she has the duck and weave down -now she just needs to learn the flip-flop.

    skipthesong

Yeah, maybe she should just talk about how 'the KKK is not that bad' like the Arizona Repub. dude, right?" Well, if you compare to whats going on in the states recently, the KKK doesn't even come to mind anymore. There are some real nasty gangs all over the place, and they are no longer just a bunch of fat hells angles with tasteless tats.

Good move. Wait til you get approved before banning guns!" Well, we all know guns are going to be banned. So again, she should have just stood up and said what she feels.

Alito didn't answer them, why should Sotomayor? < :-)

I can't believe that people are this upset about race.

Sorry to say, but if you interpret Sotomayor's 2001 comment as racist, then it just shows you have a lesser intellect.

Her comment had nothing to do with race, you have to read from a sociological perspective, though, that might be difficult for many.

    adaydream

skipthesong, I'm satisfied that if Alito got through without answering personal questions that Sotomayor shouldn't be chastized for the same.

But because Sotomayor is giving the safe answers, the republicans hold her to a different standard. < :-)

lets face it, the republicans are racist (Sessions supported the KKK saying the only thing wrong with the KKK was that they smoked dope) and they cannot accept someone who should in their minds should be cleaning their house for $5 an hour as a member of the SCOTUS.

Obama nailed them on this nomination, once again being 10 steps ahead of the republicants. I hope every latino in Arizona votes against that loser Kyl. McCain better vote yes on this one or he may lose as well.

And Wolfpack, calling La Raza a racist organization is like calling the Chamber of Commerce racist. It is stupid and reflects badly on you and your posts.

Get use to it boys, the republicants are going down for the count and they may not be able to get up. Thanks to Cheney, Bush and Limbaugh for that.

She has already said publicly that she believes abortion rights are a settled issue so what more does she need to add? Zurcronium, the republicans have done it to themselves by catering to the nutty base. I am disatisfied with Obama's spending policies but where would I turn? Social liberal, fiscal conservative means I never have a good choice in the voting booth.

“It’s muddled, confusing, backtracking on issue after issue,” complained Sen Jeff Sessions of Alabama, the top Republican on the Judiciary panel. “I frankly am a bit disappointed in the lack of clarity and consistency in her answers.”

Translation: She would not say what I wanted her to say.

    usaexpat,

I am similar and was happy when clinton balanced the budget and grew the economy. But these times are tough now, near depression levels thanks to bush, and if not for the government stepping in american capitalism would have failed, that is the fact. So for a few years the budgets are going to be busted but by the time Obama leaves office in 2016 the budget will be balanced. What was a crime was bush breaking the budget during relative good times so that the rich could get richer and then leaving obama with a near depression.

    usaexpat

zurcronium: We definitely agree on Clinton's balanced budget, that alone is why I'm still a fan of the man. I hope you are right that Obama will be able to balance the budget when the economy recovers. It still blows my mind that Bush managed to run us into the red while the economy was booming.

    zurcronium

    usaexpat,

reagan did the same thing in the 80s and clinton inherited the same mess, recession and huge deficits. He raised taxes on the rich and tightened the budget and in a few years he turned things around. Obama can do the same although bush has really screwed things up much worse than reagan.

regarding the nominee, she breezed through it. The republicants could not touch her. Its over and many repubs may vote for her as they have no reason not to do so at this point. The idiot republicants, like Kyl, will vote no of course.

Intelligence does not equal wisdom. Wisdom is what knows the difference between right and wrong. Intelligence is only about knowledge and how to use it. Sotomeyer should be more open with her views on what she thinks is right and what she thinks is wrong.

    One only has to see how far both Britain and Australia declined after both nations foolishly banned guns. Britain in particular saw catastrophic rises in crime that remain today. The facts;

-The U.S. Department of Justice says a person is nearly twice as likely to be robbed, assaulted or have a vehicle stolen in Britain as in the United States.

-robberies rose 81 percent in England and Wales, they fell 28 percent in the United States.

-Likewise, assaults increased 53 percent in England and Wales but declined 27 percent in the United States.

-Burglaries doubled in England but fell by half in the United States.

-motor vehicle theft rose 51 percent in England, it remained the same in America.

-day burglary is commonplace and dangerous because criminals know they will not be shot at if caught flagrante delicto. Not so in the U.S., where burglars not only prefer night burglaries but try to make sure homeowners are not in to avoid being shot at by the intended victim.

-The rising tide of thievery and burglaries in England has dubbed Britain "a nation of thieves," wrote the London Sunday Times, which noted: "More than one in three British men has a criminal record by the age of 40. While America has cut its crime rate dramatically Britain remains the crime capital of the West.

Studies have shown that guns in the hands of law-abiding citizens not only save lives but also protect private property, reduce injuries to good people, and crime is generally deterred. Lets hope Sotomayor has a grip on reality. The US doesn't want to end up lawless and "broken" like Britain.
