Two marine guards stationed on Gyodong island near the border fired rifle rounds at the flight as it approached Incheon International Airport west of Seoul, mistaking it for a North Korean military plane.................................

They were probably bored. Expect demotion soon.

I will be quite surprise if NKorea actually has a function Air Force.

Doubt they have the fuel to flying their planes even for training.

The ending paragraphs of this article seem like they are trying to justify the idiocy of what happened. Is there THAT much of a lack of communication that soldiers would mistake a 117 or whatever the plane with more than a hundred passengers for a North Korean fighter?

These soldiers, probably doing their mandatory service at young adulthood should be imprisoned. Not only have they endangered their nation, they have given fuel to NK and risked the lives of their country-people and those of China who were on-board.

I mirror those above... thank god no one was hurt.

Firing with rifles at a plane that's obviously too far away? What the hell were they smoking? There was no threat and their response obviously had no chance of success so in the end they just look stupid.

hehe wow you nearly spun that one right off the page. You do have to give it to the North Koreans, tho. When they fire they actually kill people. But more importantly we need to understand how the South Koreans bring it on themselves with situations like this.

How did I 'spin' it? These soldiers risked the lives of their country people, and I have no doubt the NK media is eating it up and pointing out the idiocy of SK (hence, the 'fuel'). They also risked the lives of Chinese passengers. Not sure why you're giving NK credit though -- shooting down a plane full of people is NOT a good thing.

No lives were at risk from small arms fire directed at a plane out of range. The incident highlights 1) the stupidity of the two soldiers and 2) the tension in the region in general. Not any risk to shooting down a plane.

As for "fuel" for North Korea, they producing nothing but anti-South Korean messages on a minute-by-minute basis. Oh, and they actually kill South Koreans. Perhaps for a brief moment in time their lies won't need as much imagination but it's an odd angle to take when you know North Korea is going to distort anything and everything anyway.
