Well, we have no way of knowing what the situation is really like there; this makes it hard to add an intelligent comment. If a government doctor is saying this, then I would tend to believe him, rather than the government spokesman or the military spokesman, Brigadier Udaya Nanayakkara.
Civilians caught between two cynical battle-hardened armies fighting to the death. I can't imagine anything worse.

good comment, nandakandamanda
Since this is, at its fundamental roots, a conflict between two different philosophies and religions (Hindu and Buddhist), one wonders why individuals in the opposing sides can't seem to go back to the roots and find common ground. Where did this all go wrong?

This is regretable and horrible on so many levels.
Somebody is at fault here. But it appears that the ones who have these weapons are claiming they didn't do the bombing.
The UN needs to take a good look at this incident. < :-)

Sri Lanka receieved massive Chinese military supply of weapons was the cause of their rarely seen victories over the tamil tigers. The objective was Sri lanak return a port for Chinese ships to anchor. Hopefully their bloody wars ending as soon as possible, the tamil tigers were defeated anyway, their hang on was unconstructive and unnecessary!Who cares the Tamils!

After Israel and N. Korea, Sri Lanka"s news reports are the most uncredible, propaganda filled stories...let independent reporters in or release satellite imagery.

Czar, where did you get your facts about China? I was also wondering why the sudden slaughter was possible.

Czar, "who cares the Tamils?" Your comment should be "Who cares about the Tigers?" I guess.
The Tamils are an ethnic grouping based in southern India and northern Sri Lanka. The Tigers of Eelam are their armed wing trying to carve out an independent state within the northern and eastern part of Sri Lanka. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/LiberationTigersofTamilEelam
