Why is the world standing by? Russia, China, Iran, Saudi Arabia, Europe, the US?
Libya was seen as an armed force threatening an unarmed people. Oil there was too, yes.
In Syria the people were, and are, to some extent armed, and tribal divisions seem more clear-cut, so is it the lack of an appealing voice of innocence anywhere? Or is it that no-one supports the Sunnis there, not even Iran?
In some ways this reminds me of the Civil War fought 400 years ago in Britain. It came to an end after many battles with thousands killed. It needed to reach that end, and the end of it set the beginning for the future.
What would have happened if some outside force had tried to intervene? It might have saved lives, but would outside intervention have perverted the course of history and left an unfinished agenda, merely put off for another time? Is there a time when two sides need to fight it out to the bitter end?
There are many troubling aspects to the horrors inside Syria and no easy answers, IMHO. Any sensible ideas out there?
