Yes, Western politicians will just be stupid enough to get involved in yet another "Arab spring" and help yet another Shariah theocracy to power.

Never, ever, underestimate the sheer stupidity of the Western liberal elites.

Can anyone hear the echo of the words from all the other leaders who have been deposed? NATO needs to launch the US taxpayer financed drones and protect the common people. WHATEVER happens after that has to be better than allowing a dictator kill his people without remorse. If the writers who respond to this story live in a FREE country, and they don't like the situation, go to Syria or N.K. It is all yours!

Gadhafi was responsible for the Rockerbie/PAMAM explosion back in 1988 he was protected by Egypt's Murbarak for over two decades without punishment, instead he was treated as VIP in the last ten years! His country produce oil and close to europe so those lost of lives in Rockerbie/PAMAM explosion was definately negilable if you compare teh huge oil 'temptation'! This is definately not the case of Syria, so Mr Assad was over reacted, he better clean up his business anmd mind his own chaos!

Oh? Since when is there oil in Afghanstan, Kosovo, and Uganda? That simplistic slogan does not stand a reality check.

Actually there is oil in Uganda. Also, Afghanistan and Kosovo are in strategic positions for oil pipelines.

Now Assad and NK's Kim are bound to be best friends forever - though the definition of "forever" requires frequent reference as its meaning changes daily. Syria is not Libya, but people are people, and theirs will prevail eventually. Let Assad - and Kim -stew paranoid about his destiny until he meets it - he will have no moment of peace for the rest of his days.

Is "dogfight" between dogs, or between airplanes, or between men? Over what?----- "In his speech, Mustafa Abdul-Jalil, head of the interim government, declared that a Gadhafi-era law that placed restrictions on multiple marriages (read: nobody but Gadhafi could), which is the tenet of Islamic law, or Shariah, would be done away with."

It would seem that Assad recognizes that he could end up sharing Ghadhafi's fate in rather short order. Although what he could do to "make the ME burn" is something I don't understand.

The west kept propping up dictators in the hope of keeping the Islamic fundies under control. But the pent up frustration of the population is now resulting in a backlash that could sweep the fundies into power. That's the problem when you support policies that are anti-democratic. They have a way of looking like a quick fix but failing in the long term.

What are you talking about? Syria has oil, it produces 385,000 barrels per day. In case you haven't noticed but the possible fallout from a military intervention in Syria are far more serious than in Libya. Why do you think the US military didn't intervene in Bahrain? I mean that has oil and not only that but is in a very strategic place in terms of world wide distribution of oil.

Plus they technically or legally can't because China and Russia will block any resolution that would authorize military force.

Having a one size fits all policy is bad policy especially when dealing with the mideast.

Assad is a bad guy but we need to really see this situation from many points of view, but we also have to try to respect the will of the Syrian people.

" but we also have to try to respect the will of the Syrian people. "

Except there is no such thing as "the Syrian people". Like other Arab dictatorships the Syrian regime rests on the support of one faction (in this case the Alevites) while others resent it. Once you upset that balance, all hell breaks lose.

But don´t count on the stupid Western liberal elites to have made the effort to understand that.
