Lots of different reports coming out about this. From what I've read the Taliban are ready to split from Al Queda and enter into peace negotiations with the Afghan government. If Afghanistan and the West could drive a wedge between the Taliban and Al Queda it would be a great development, and yet anther critical blow to Al Queda.
Then comes a question—with whom do you engage? My general answer is that if you want to have relevant results you must speak to those who are relevant.
This seems to me a lesson worth learning. Obviously speaking to relevant parties is no guarantee of relevant results, but the failure to do so probably makes such results much less likely.

Ludicrious. The Taliban, Al Quaid, and the Saudi government all believe in the same divine message. Radical islam does not have a place for peaceful coexistance with us dirty kuffars. The jihad will not stop until the world is united under Shariah law.
It is totally naive to imagine this meeting has any benefit for us.
I agree that this would seem to be a good development. I wonder, though. Haven't we also read that the Taliban were ready to split with al-Qaeda 7 years ago?

Hmmmm, weren't 19 of the 20 bombers from Saudi Arabia?
There's no telling what-so-ever is being discussed.
It might be negotiations, it could be a new alliance, it could be absolutely nothing.
But it is interesting though. < :-)

Willi, your conspircay sounds particularly breathless this morning.
I'm just trying to figure how the house of Saud, with all it's drinking, cocaine and women abuse will join the fight for sharia law...
