The talks are important in that the entire border problem is to satisfy both the USA representing democracy and China representing Communism which is already "outdated" and a difference really does not exist except in the politically correctness of the countries representing the different ideals and differing political power structure and system. The border was never desired by Chosun (N&S Korea) to begin with. It was placed there to contain China and Russian communist takeover.

The loudspeakers and the radio programs are an irritating psychological war against a Kim regime trying to keep a country together and from being consumed by China and/or Russia. But they know that S Korea have to do it to satisfy USA demands that keep US forces in Korea to help them to survive an invasion. The armed insurgences and border confrontation, and even the missile launches may or may not be Kim's own doing but a way to satisfy the demands of their neighbor that favors the "rogue" role played by N Korea.

In any case they need to talk "closely" in order to communicate their true intentions, protecting themselves while being used by China and the USA. Economics aside, N&S Korea plays a "strategic" military role for both the USA and China. Such is global politics.

DPRK fired a couple rockets poorly aimed at Korean loudspeakers on the DMZ. Korea did not respond in kind, but saturated/devastated the rocket launch site with 36 155mm HE rounds fired from Samsung K-9 Thunder SP Howitzers. That shocked the DPRK into requesting urgent talks. Further provocations will not be responded in kind, but with far greater force and lethality. Kim Jong-un has lost face.

The South has lost track of garbage cans that can submerge? I would think they should talk better to Japan which has a Maritime SDF that specializes in hunting ex Soviet trash.

tinawatanabe true but it is thought that North Korea will attack Japan at the same time.

"unusual North Korean troop and submarine movement indicated continued battle preparation."

Kim Jong Un had better keep his forces from launching any major attacks, if he doesn't, it will be his demise.

Won't they be busy with South Korea?

The north has agreed to express their regret at planting land mines in the DMZ and South Korea appears ready to accept this "apology". Yet at the same time South Korea considers repeated Japanese apologies and expressions of regret for wartime acts to be insufficient. It's a good example of South Korean double standards. Park should explain why she accepts the insincere North Korean "regret" whilst rejecting Japanese apologies.
