One thing that is not being reported (here at least) is that this rampage was instigated by Arab youths, the same ethnic group that have been holding Western Sydney to ransom for the last 15 years. Sydney is a wonderful multicultural city where all cultures peacefully co-exist. However after the savage racially-motivated gang rapes of girls of Anglo-Saxon extraction nothing has changed. The elders from the the Lebanese community are some of the nicest people you could meet but something has happened and we've all partly failed the younger Arab community which has lead to this kind of anomosity which led to the dispicable Cronulla riots.
Those responsible should be condemned however serious attention to understanding why these young men of Lebanese extraction feel so angry towards other Australians needs to be looked into to stem the violence.

Could it be that the youths of Arab extraction, otherwise called Australians (for that's what they are) are simply vicious thugs who are in need of some tender lovin' correction? As a matter of fact, their ethicity hasn't been reported in Aussie news yet either, at least not the news that I watched tonight. Nonetheless, it was the first thing that crossed my mind when I heard it on the radio this morning. Very sad.
I remember living in a gaijin house in Jap-an with a guy who grew up in Cabramatta, one of the most multicultural suburbs of Sydney. As a caucasian, he was one of a racial minority at the school he went to. He told us one day that while christian Lebanese were generally well integrated into mainstream society, young muslim Lebanese weren't, and often didn't even consider themselves to be Australian. I got the impression he was talking about young men rather than women, by the way. I'm not saying that Islam is the root of the problem here; far from it. As eresay said, the elders are beyond reproach. But perhaps there is something of the islamic, male-centred culture being mixed with the selfishness of relativism pervading Australia these days. And this is telling these fellows that they are a law unto themselves.
At any rate, they should have the book thrown at them. Even better, let's drop them into(and leave them in) Dafur, Iraq, Burma, Tibet, or Zimbabwe so that they can find out just how good they've got it in the wonderful land of Oz!

eresay, what's your source? "The Age" website says
Back when I was a journo, we were warned against using ethnic appearance in the description of criminal suspects, and the JT story seems to follow that logic. If you didn't know her and passed her on the street, would you know that tarento "Becky" is Japanese? Akko Wada is Korean? Half? If Australia is as multicultural as the U.S., then it's best to lay off. Reason: You don't want to plaster an entire ethnic group with the actions of a few that may not even be part of said group.

If we make race an issue, it becomes an issue. Can't we all just get along? I don't think mentioning their race is necessary at all because it makes the racists feel they have a cause. Well put telecasterplayer

Those hellions from Victoria Island, British Columbia, at it again. Or is that a euphemism for Kiwi?
Apparently not.

It seems as if this Arab gang is an unique Australian phenomena. Sure there are gangs in Europe too from Arab ethnicity but from an European perspective it seems to be less of a divide than Australia or UK for that matter. There are no Arab gangs in Sweden.

I think eresay has a valid point. If you do not give respect sooner or later they will take that respect into their own hands. I do believe Australia to be a racist society not giving enough respect to the ME Aussies.

I don't think at all that there's a good case for calling Australians racist (after all the 'riot' in Bondi was motivated by specific racially-motivated gang attacks in a particular suburb). That said, I don't think attacks like this are caused by giving them too little respect, and it's certainly not going to make them any more respected.

I would respect people going out and seeking revenge.. Luckily, my kid wasn't one of the kids to get hurt..
Forget wasting time with the Aussie Police, there are too many soft mandates concerning crimes like this for what they consider kids...
If I were one of the perpetrators' parents, I would be running.

Australian papers claim the gang in question was made up of Maori and Pacific Islanders who were aping American "gangstas" - even using on the web pages where they boast of their exploits the same retarded spelling rappers in the States like to use. How pathetic. Even the criminal element has to imitate America.

One thing is for sure: If the attackers were white, the Australian media would be screaming about racism in capital letters.
So it is sure to be another ethnic group. Giving the track record, a group of immigrants adhering to the Religion of Peace is a pretty good bet.

Zaphod, as long as you can predict the future and alternate realities, could you please give me tomorrow night's "MegaMillions Lottery" numbers?
