Train catches fire in southern India, at least 15 killed

New Delhi —

At least 15 passengers were killed and many others injured in a fire that broke out Friday on an express train in India’s southern state of Andhra Pradesh, the Press Trust of India reported. The fire started at 1:15 a.m. in one of the sleeper coaches of the Secunderabad-Kakinada Gautami Express in the state’s Waranagal district, about 250 kilometers from the state capital Hyderabad, and soon spread to four other coaches,’’ South Central Railway spokesman P. Krishnaiah was quoted as saying.

The fire, which occurred when most passengers were sleep, was apparently caused by a short circuit, the PTI report said. Passengers said smoke engulfed the affected coaches and a scene of chaos prevailed with some people jumping out of the train, it said.
