I don't like the semantics here. They are not "his" people. He does not own them. But putting it that way makes it look like they are sheep and he has every right to keep them in line and cull the flock.
What should be said is that the should stop killing the people of Syria. They are their own people and its natural that they should choose to accept or reject Assad as their leader.

Stop killing OUR people would be more appropriate since this statement comes from the United Nations.

Wow. The head of the UN making demands. That's gonna help (/sarcasm).
The obvious missing part of the sentence is the "or what". Say the mad optometrist (gasp) defies the UN and keeps up the voilence. What then? I can guess. The UN will ask NATO or perhaps the US alone to step in and do something.
What a waste of money the UN has become. They should stick to digging wells and innoculating children, and stay out of politics/foreign affairs.

Qatar is calling for military intervention. Time for the Arab league to grow a pair.

Syria reminds me of the old question, ie, what happens when an irresistible force meets an immovable mass?
Should outsiders even be taking sides? What is the proper role for outsiders? Monitors? Referees?

I doubt that Assad is frightened in the least bit by the UN chiefs moral outrage. Now if Ban Ki-moon had an aircraft carrier with a deck load of F-18's, he might be taken more seriously by a dictator.

FYI, that was never part of Ban Ki-moon's message. Some people are actually capable of making suggestions without throwing threats of violence.
He made no demands.
The U.N. is not a military org. Its point is talk and it always was. How many wars were averted by the U.N.? Nobody knows! It is impossible to keep track of the number of wars averted because no one has a window into alternate timelines.
The U.N. has value, but those who only understand threats and violence can't figure out what it is.

And I'm sure he's just going to stop everything and listen... Doubt "we'll" do anything. They don't have anything we really want or will pay the price of what going in would cost - blame Iran for that.
