Among these were Wisconsin Representative Paul Ryan, the 2012 Republican vice presidential candidate, who said in a statement it “would be irresponsible to raise an insolvent program’s debt ceiling without making the necessary reforms.”

These guys just don't get it. At all. If you want to reform the program, then reform the program. Just don't decide to do it right after the hurricane. Just stupid timing by people who are so wrapped up in their own political BS that they can't see the realities on the ground. Are they expecting people who lost their jobs and houses to sit tight while they hold study sessions and lobby for votes?

I can imagine someone with a gunshot wound going to the hospital and a Republican pushing the doctor aside and saying that now is a good time to talk about medical reform because we have so much debt and we can't leave our children with debt and we're irresponsible and yadda yadda yadda. They have become addicted to holding people in need hostage to push forward their political agenda.

Superlib -- exactly. These Tea-Party types and social-conservatives are so single issue focused that they cannot see the forest because of the trees. And because most are in the House, and therefore face re-election every two years, they are a stranglehold on the U.S. Congress. Even Boehner cannot control them, and they are supposedly in his party. Truly sad that hatred for Obama back in 2010 manifested itself in this way. And one interesting thing that a columnist here in the states pointed out is that most of these conservaties come from states that contrubute LESS tot he federal government in revenues than they receive back, where NY and NJ, who needed these funds are net contributors. So these clowns preach less government, but are complete hypocrits in that regard.

Agreed. Republicans blur the line between the idea of cutting spending and simple anti-Obama ideology. The birthers and "anti-socalists" and "Obama is a Muslim" contingency make up a portion of the Republican base and I find it hard to believe that people like that are going to be reasonable when making opinions about Obama's policies.

America is broke. I guess it's every man, woman and child for him/her self.
