U.S. seeks to balance message on bin Laden death

Well, I seem to remember that one goal in Afghanistan was to "Find Bin Laden." Next, we were trying to "Defeat the Taliban, who are Sheltering Bin Laden." More recently, we seem to be trying to "Stabilize Afghanistan" or "Stabilize the Region."

So now, the Bin Laden goal has been achieved, and therefore, the Taliban are not sheltering him, so the second goal has also been achieved. We'll have people living on Jupiter before that region is stabilized, though, so it would be nice if everyone in the US could agree what realistic goal is worth pondering, and how many people and dollars it is worth.

Right now, there is plenty to do at home (flood cleanup, tornado cleanup, road and bridge repair, etc.)if we are looking for things to do.

Justice was done but I don't see bin Laden being dead as changing much else. Well, maybe fundraising for terrorists will be harder with bin Laden's money off the table. Maybe the west will get the idea that Pakistan isn't exactly reliable. But a game changer? About as well thought out as "mission accomplished."

Obama said he authorized the killing. This is not necessarily the authorization of murder, which by definition is the "unlawful" killing of another. I don't think Obama would ever admit to authorizing a murder, because he will claim it was lawful.

because according to the official report, he was dangerously armed with a TV remote control and had to be taken out immediately.

Why is it acceptable for a US military team to invade another country and kill?

If this is excused as an act of war, that would make Pakistan the enemy.

Is Pakistan the enemy of the U.S.A?

If Pakistan was harboring the USA's #1 wanted terrorist leader, then yes, Pakistan is an enemy of the United States of America.

Pakistan is about as useful as a hostage with a gun pointed at their head. Might be because they are?

Does anyone think Taliban fighters are going to start backing out of fighting because OBL died? Who are these politician fooling? Well, not me. They martyred OBL. And a martyr is worth ten posturing politicians.

I really liked Farmboy's post. I just wish the goal would have stayed focused on al-Quaida because we probably could have had OBL a long time ago and all that time shooting up Iraq and Afghanistan has been a total waste.

Bin Laden gave up his right as a "human being" as normal people see it a long time ago. The man was an anti-human being that used mass-murder as a means to achieve his twisted goals.

I think it's definitely the first time I ever smiled on hearing of someone's un-timely demise.

The information that was retrieved from bin Laden's compound is going to lead to many more terrorist arrests, foiled terrorist murder plots and dead terrorists. Anyone one who wants to take bin Laden's place is free to do so at their own risk. Especially the burial at sea part.
