Have to ask what the average prison sentence is for rape in Korea. If it is like here, the guy was treated harshly. Thoguh that being said, I wouldn't be upset if they locked him in and threw away the key.

@tmarie: To answer your question, they will get about 3 1/2 years for raping an American GI. Back in October 2011, a South Korean man was sentenced last week to 3 1/2 years in prison for the rape of a Camp Casey soldier in Uijeongbu last summer.

The court ordered Flippin to undergo 80 hours of counseling and his personal information to be made public on a South Korean government website for 10 years, Lee said.

"The man, a 25-year-old convenience store clerk identified only by his last name of Ju because of privacy concerns, met the soldier at a Uijeongbu nightclub on July 10." So much for naming and shaming him like they did this American.

To quote from the article that was in Stars & Stripes: "He danced with her and then followed her as she walked to the restroom, according to a Uijeongbu District Court judge. He raped the woman around 3 a.m. in the building’s staircase, police and court officials said. The 18-year-old victim had arrived in South Korea only a week before the incident, according to a Uijeongbu police officer. 'We also took into consideration the fact that Ju is a first-time offender, and committed his crime unintentionally after drinking and regrets his wrongdoings,' he said."

Just goes to show I think we should let South Korea fend for themselves. Instead of people demanding an apology from Obama, I think their president should offer up an apology for this crime too.

Just as I thought. One sentence for the GIs, one for the locals. GIs get a crap rep all over the world but I feel for them.

    tmarie,

Somehow, I do not think this guy deserves your sympathy.

Guess you missed my first comment. I am certainly not giving him any. Was just wondering if Korea was like Japan in which there are sentences for the locals and harsher ones for the foreigners.

I am not convinced that locals in either country get off easier than foreigners do in average cases. In this case, it is a member of the armed forces and it relates to a minor. I assume that had a lot to do with the sentence.

The American soldier that murdered a bar girl sentenced to life after remedy was released in 2006 for serving 13 years only ......this guy could be released maybe next fall, you know he robbed for $4.50 only! You know the SOFA prevented American soldier to be indicted or punished and they were above all local lawsand they shall never pay a respect to the people of their so-called 'ally'!

just-a-guy is correct. History proves he won't be serving 10 years. If anything, the double-standard works in reverse. Don't fall for the act. The sentence is smoke and mirrors. When the hulabaloo dies down Flippin will be free in America, and no one so brave and upstanding on the net will have the stones to kick his teeth in, as he deserves.

Not true. If he was released early, he would still have to face prosecution in the US for his crime. It is not "double jeapordy" since he wasn't convicted in a US court. While he is in prison, he still will be considered a US soldier until such time as he is released. I know people here in Yokosuka whose job is to go and visit Americans in JN prisons, and the stories they tell are pretty bad.

People in these situations still face criminal charges when they get out. Some who were "high profile" cases are still in, no time commuted.

I am surprised to learn the SK govt has a criminal jurisdiction over US soldiers who are stationed in SK.

Japan needs to demand the same rights to Washington.

You mean like Kenneth L. Markle, the killer and coke bottle rapist, who first got life, then got 15 years, then got released after 13 years total? Yeah. He walks free in America. After killing a woman, he walks free.

and the stories they tell are pretty bad.

A pretty bad story about this raping monster's time in prison is either going to make me smile or make me declare that that should not happen in prison. One of the two. There won't be any tears from me. This...thing...broke into a young woman's room in the middle of the night, threatened her with scissors, sexually assaulted her repeatedly then stole money off her. He is not a mere date rapist or age of consent offender. He is a violent rapist. The real deal. The creature that creates waves other more mild sex offenders take the heat for and innocent soldiers too. If you have some sympathy for him because he wore a uniform, your sympathy is very poorly placed indeed.

What a depraved, no-hoper, sadist this Flippin is - 10 years is way too short. Let's just hope the poor girl can somehow pick up her life. I really hope the Koreans single out this American GI for "special punishment" on a daily basis in prison. With the greatest of respect to my American friends: where on earth do you recruit some of these men from? Is there any sort of educational/psych/background check to get into the US Military - or do they just recruit the ex-cons and those on the streets?
