Let's hope this is a big step forward for the US and they get the right. Everyone should have the right to marry the person they love, regardless of gender. That's what love means, and any institution limited by what some old fictional book says has no true meaning.

"Advocates for traditional marriage...."

Straight people already destroyed the institution of marriage. And here we have gay people trying to strengthen it, and the jackasses who pretend to they care about it trying to stop them.

The stupid. It burns.

Some bigots like to portray gay men in particular as promiscuous and disease spreading and then oppose the idea that they'd like to be part of the conservative, monogamous institution of marriage. Other conservatives like to tell us how marriage is good for society and the economy but oppose the idea of people who are very often more likely to have professional jobs from being part of the conservative, monogamous institution of marriage. All very strange.

I think the real problem is that we have unelected lifetime tenure judges deciding the future of American society. And I support gay marriage! When are we going to start over again with that whole constitution thing?

No problem, just get some more Republicans elected, enough to start the amendment ball rolling, but why would they stop at modifying the judiciary?

It is a weird case to start with. Has anybody ever demanded that official marriage should be denied to "gay people"? I can not recall that. I thought issue always has been "same-sex marriage", and I am with those who think that should not be officially sanction by governments. I do not think that two heterosexual men should be officially married. Now what changes if one of both of them is gay? Nothing! Who cares what they do in the privacy of their home, they are still two men. It is the "gay activists" who want to make sexual orientation an issue. As if that changed anything.

Interesting. When I was in New Orleans, I learned that the Bible Belt has the hightest divorce rate in the US. Even though Jesus said don't do it. I'm totally gay, so my opinion is biased of course. Next, how about Japan? Not likely. We are not so explicit (in your face) about sex. Here is a very "mind your own business" culture.

I support the biblical stance that marriage should be between man and woman, not anything else. And if the U.S. Supreme Court does pass it would be a step toward disaster for this country.

Many gay friends of mine have been legally married in the US. If one's religion or moral princple works against other people's great hapiness like a marrige, it is unfortunate but such conflict is unavoidable in a multi-cultural society.

I personally hope Japan to legalize gay marriage soon.

@3dgcb

I support gay marriage but I do respect your religious belief. I guess the foundation of the US and its current situation where all different race and religion mingle and live together in a big nation makes this matter really difficult.

'I support the biblical stance that marriage should be between man and woman, not anything else. And if the U.S. Supreme Court does pass it would be a step toward disaster for this country'

The bible says that homosexual behaviour deserves execution. I think we could do without a 'biblical stance' in 2015.

3dgcb, do you support the Biblical stance that all of my ancestors are in hell because they did not know Christ, through no fault of their own. Also "Now as the church submits to Christ, so also wives should submit to their husbands in everything." Do you treat your wife like that? It's in the Bible so I guess you support it. I'd like to marry my partner, but not treat him like that.

Newer generation of Japanese have much different ideas about being gay or social acceptance of homosexuality and transgenders.

Historically, Japan had been quite accepting of gay people and its culture can be seen in historical figures, diaries, Kabuki, Ukiyo-e and such. Shinto does not prohibit gay marriage, either. It was commonly accepted up until Meiji period where Western religious beliefs and ideology came into play.

I am not sure if you follow Internet culture and trend in Japanese language or not, but recent years, overwhelming amount of (especially male) Japanese netizens have been posting threads to come out and share their own experience. The phenonmina is remarkable and to my surprise, even anti-everything 2ch people support gay culture (whether it sounds good to the public or not) and show positive attitude towards them. (I apologize if my idea about 2ch is biased.)

I see some temples and attraction sites host weddings for same-sex couple. It's a wonderful thing.

It's you who has a 'biblical stance'. The bible does not advocate treating homosexuals with dignity, respect or compassion. A large part of the reason why homosexuals haven't achieved equal rights is due to the people referencing the bible. Listen to the likes of Tony Perkins and Bill Donahue.

Can you explain what disaster you're talking about? A bolt from the heavens? A Katrina? What?
