This is like asking a bully not to bully. They need to be shown they aren't the largest kid on the block.

More like a former world power trying to use its reputation to influence when the bully has no fear of the former power.

2 ( +8 / -6 )

@MarkG The reputation is for putting together a coalition. Everyone knows the mongols are numerous.

-2 ( +3 / -5 )

China wielding the biggest stick in the South China Sea.

2 ( +3 / -1 )

We all know China really don't care what anyone thinks. They will continue to do it regardless. The question is, what are the other countries governments involved in the disputed islands going to do? Lodge protest after protest? Like I said, we all know China don't really give a damn.

Very sad, indeed. But for the next two years, until we have a president that has a strong foreign policy and is tough on rhetoric, China will only progress and be more emboldened to intimidate everyone in region

Agreed. China doesn't give a rat's behind to what anybody thinks.

It's like they're saying, "We're CHINA! Wha-cha gonna do about it?!"

6 ( +7 / -1 )

Its the bigger bully telling the smaller bully what to do.

-5 ( +5 / -10 )

these warnings are meaningless, meanwhile Cina continues doing as it pleases on the islands.

6 ( +6 / -0 )

The Chinese will continue to reclaim land and install military forces on the new islands. They will not stop and they will not take any notice of the US. Unless other claimants do the same they will be forced out of the entire area by the Chinese military in a few years time. The longer people sit around moaning the more entrenched the Chinese forces will become.

Communist China started this project after watching Obama's red line in Syria and reset button with Russia. Regardless, U.S. will rise to the occasion after this current foreign policy's fiasco by narcissist Obama, the retreat-in -chief.

You might be able to bully Asian nation but you will not bully the Us, China. Consider that a whack on the nose and go back to your Asian play pen...

-1 ( +3 / -4 )

Mischief Reef? That is a pretty apt name considering the mischief going on there!

1 ( +1 / -0 )

Be careful on what patch of land you're standing! Because China might have sovereignty on it.

'Be careful on what patch of land you're standing! Because China might have sovereignty on it.'

Very true. Then again, you might also get blasted into smithereens by a bomb or be turned into flying mince by a drone on other patches. Pick your patches with care.Of course, what we need is a republican administration like the last one who were a shining example of how to not threaten peace and stability in the world.

And exactly what is the U.S. going to do to China if they do not heed the warnings? Are they going to put Economic Sanctions on them? No because that would greatly hurt the U.S. and World Economy. Are they going to use Military Force? No because the U.S. Military cannot defeat the Taliban so how are they going to defeat China. The U.S. and Japan are the biggest reasons why China is so strong today because they gave them technology and allowed companies to move factories and jobs there which caused China to become the 2nd largest economy in the world which is allowing them to increase spending on their military and do what they are doing in their territorial disputes. I do not think China especially since the communist took over have ever been afraid of the U.S., after all they fought them in Korea and to a lesser degree in Vietnam and they certainly are not afraid of them now.

'And exactly what is the U.S. going to do to China if they do not heed the warnings? Are they going to put Economic Sanctions on them?'

The rightists on this site have been blaming Obama for every flare-up around the globe but offer very little in the way of constructive ideas. Putin's behaviour in Ukraine gave us flannel like 'well, with a tougher leader the US may have possibly made Putin think about thinking twice before acting' while one beauty I heard was the military base in Germany was the only thing preventing Putin from annexing the whole of Eastern Europe.

Just a question to the rightists, what would you do about this? Shout louder?

The pacific is largest ocean. With the USN 7th / 5th fleets all over the place and the tiny US controlled islands in the pacific, one could skip from Hawaii to PI to Okinawa without getting wet. So China claims the s.china sea, it is what it is-

Provide the other side namely Taiwan, Philippines, Vietnam, etc. with high tech weapons that the US had restrained in the past to level the playing field. May even provide training like what Us is doing with Vietnam.

In our view, China’s land reclamation and the construction activity are fuelling greater anxiety within the region .

And we encourage all claimants as we have for a long time to pursue peaceful and diplomatic approaches to maritime and territorial disputes in the South China Sea

So as far as I understand - this sea washes China's coasts... not Americans...

I think US concerned too much about the problems of distant countries

Do they mean that China should not destabilise Asia as the US has not destabilised the Middle East?

1 ( +4 / -3 )

BertieWooster

To be fair the middle east would had been in far worse situation if the US had not intervened. The situation ISIS had created could have spread out all around the Arab states.

-4 ( +2 / -6 )

Do they mean that China should not destabilise Asia as the US has not destabilised the Middle East?

Completely different, blame ISIS and all the sectarian violence for the destabilizion and it's only going to get worse now with Iran in the works. As for China, that country has been purposely trying to muscle, take, overpower, intimidate and just bullying everyone throughout Asia to show its dominance and longing or making itself a superpower in the region willing to take on anyone, crying to send a strong message. Building up its military, stealth bombers, aircraft carriers etc. China is the problem in the region.

-4 ( +3 / -7 )

Countries need to isolate China...to unify and take a stand against this regime.

BertieWoosterAPR. 10, 2015 - 07:53PM JST Do they mean that China should not destabilise Asia as the US has not destabilised the Middle East? That's exactly what they mean. Do as we say, not as we do.

SamuriBlue: Please describe how the ME would be worse off if the US didn't intervene? ISIS was created by the extremely failed interference, comited by the US, in Iraq.

This exact same statement can be said to the US too. In fact, more so than towards China. This is basically China's reply to the US "pivot to Asia", which caused a lot of changes to status quos in the region. They're flipping the bird while the entire world watches.

1 ( +4 / -3 )

To the rejects that thinks the US is a bully I'm Asia, you ain't seen nothin' yet. Moaning about how the US takes up too much land in Okinawa, lol. Clearly MacArthur had the right idea at the end of the Korean War: no China, no problem.

“The United States warned on Thursday that China’s effort to expand its territory in the South China Sea by building on disputed islands was a threat to regional stability.” Who in the US would want to warn China? “U.S. Defense Secretary Ash Carter gently chided China on Friday for its approach to territorial disputes in the South China Sea,” according to ABC News.

In response, “Chinese Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Hua Chunying said that no matter what anyone said or did, it would not change the facts of China's sovereignty or its determination to defend its territory. Other South China Sea claimants have done the same over the years. ‘We urge the U.S. sides to speak and act with caution, to strictly abide by their promises not to take a position on the relevant territorial ownership issue, and do more to benefit regional peace and stability and not the opposite,’ she said.” Now this may be a warning for the US to butt out.

I'll bet not only China but all of the nations in the Far East are just jumping with joy at this news. After all, it's not everyday that you get such professional advice from the nation that has so successfully destabilized more regions on this planet than any other nation in history. Come on folks let's hear it for the United States of Destabilization!!

flowers Apr. 11, 2015 - 03:32AM JST In response, “Chinese Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Hua Chunying said that no matter what anyone said or did, it would not change the facts of China's sovereignty or its determination to defend its territory. Since energy is the principal bottleneck for Chinese development, China’s obsession with growth does not necessarily encourage peaceful behaviour in the way it did when trade topped the economic agenda. In trade matters, countries can benefit from each other’s prosperity, but when it comes to energy resources, one’s gain is often another’s loss. And while the South China Sea could turn East Asia back into the status of world’s most belligerent region, they also have the potential to trigger a military conflict between the two most powerful countries in the world.

China cannot promote its legal claims by expanding natural islands and creating artificial ones, as only natural islands can claim exclusive economic zones around themselves. But by increasing its military capacity in disputed areas, China is provoking the U.S. to protect its ally with enhanced military capacity of its own in a treaty that are bound to do. That these standoffs are taking place in a largely uninhabited area with a questionable economic potential makes them all the more absurd, but no less disturbing.

Hopefully China will develop a true democracy, but I could say that of many places.
