So is every report a warning? Or just the headline....

"In related news, the Pentagon wanted to alert allies that the Sun rises in the East."

China is expanding their maritime power? That's not "news", that's HISTORY!

The Pentagon document estimated China’s overall military-related spending was more than $160 billion in 2010, and that its military budget grew at an average of 12.1% over the past decade—outpacing the country’s economic growth at 10.2% over the same period.

This info is underestimated. The military budget grew at an average 14%, not 12.1%.

I notice we don't hear too much about getting the US out of Okinawa these days... hmmmm... coincidence?

Hah! In related news, it would take China several decades at least to catch up to America's maritime power!

NObody in China will takes those warnings 'seriously' and China will great leap forward in military capabilities. America needs China's money to fight talibans, they dont want 'a disgrace of retreat' from Afghanistan and they shall never having anything can stop Chinese advances. Not just the sea but the warfare in space as well. America is an obstacle that must be 'removed'! If those commanders were so 'worrying' about Chinese military, then they shouldnt committing war in iraq and afghanistan from the begining, they were just being stupid! This is China not Germany 1919 has signed the treaty of Versallies to limit her own military!

the ship was a first step towards a future fleet of carriers expected to be built over 10 years.

New aircraft carriers were under constructions, sure China will do whatever to explusion the US dominances in west pacific and beyond. Americawas broken, she owed more debts to China and like rolling snowball she will owns even more in the coming decade! Can you believes what Lenin said has comes true, the capitalist will sell su the rope to hang them! I hope my fellow american friends good health and witness the demise of their country for how stupid the Bush administration has done! By the way, nobody is taking care the 'concerns' from US government in China!

Oracle: "Hah! In related news, it would take China several decades at least to catch up to America's maritime power!"

Yes and no. If they're just starting now to build ships that will, when finished in the years to come, be the same as ships today, then yes. Also in terms of sheer number, they definitely will not match the maritime power of the US. However, my guess is that they are working on ships with ADVANCED equipment and capabilities, including the carrier buster missiles and what not that currently NO ONE has, which the US fleet would have to refit for.

Anyway, point is that they it is dangerous to the region, not necessarily to the continental US. In any case, nothing will come of it war-wise, is my guess -- at least not yet.

Sorry, am I missing something here?

The U.S is whining that China wants to do what the U.S. has been doing ever since WWII?

    Pot, kettle, anyone?

@smithinjapan: it is dangerous to the region,.......................look you have got to be very clear the definition of 'dangerous to the region'. The factor of danger in west pacific was the US deploying B-2A bomber in Guam that higly threatening the security against the people of China's survaival. There was no excuses but only those warmongers in the Pentagon and their state department has an intention to wage a nuclear holocaust to Chinese people or better known as 'nuclear massacre'! How many cities of China under their nuclear hit lists and how many millions of Chinese civilians will lost their lives? Why not mentioning this 'dangerous to the region'? America has no rights to complain about China! Some american people has hard feelings about China killing american soldiers in Korean war but so what about? Want us to apologises or regrets? Absolutely no way, no appeasement to big bully and China has done things right, no compromises to US dominances in west pacific! By the way, the building of aircraft carriers were essential to get back those lost islands from Japan, vietnam, the philipines, taiwan...etc.The disputes of border around China was China being too weak in the past 100years

Keeping stability in Asia? Surely you aren't going to do hit-and-run posts now standing behind the Chinese, are you? Man up and surprise me for once.

Heh. How many times does "just-a-guy" use the word "nuclear" in his posts? Think he's obsessing much? ;) FYI, the B2's were used for operations over Iraq and the last time I checked, there was no glowing cloud over the country.

If China wants to match the U.S. in maritime power it's certainly their perogative to do so, but I think they'll find that a large navy is a huge sinkhole of funds that could be better spent elsewhere. That's what the Soviets found out when they tried to match the U.S.'s maritime capability.

It is this attitude that guarantees the rest of the world will never allow China to become an expansive power in the Pacific. China thinks it owns everything that has the tiniest bit of resources. Nobody's going to allow them to take over anything.

With the one child policy PRC's military is like a paper tiger. They may look threatening and even roar like a tiger but once they go into battle and casualties starts piling up the parents will be yelling to pull their precious child out of harm's way faster than the missiles they fire.

To the politicians a nation with a population as big as PRC, they may not care of a few thousand dying on the battle field but to the parents who's lively hood and support depending on their only son will not be so forgiving. It will also drive the silver age syndrome of PRC further with the loss of eligible male which will become a major problem to PRC as much as Japan.

just-a-guy, why would America want to destroy the people and factories that make most of their consumer goods? I would say that China is safe from American attack. Second China is the largest growing market on earth, why would the movers and shakers in America want to kill their customers? As for the Chinese carrier? Well it is small and obsolete and nothing like what the Americans or even French operate. I do appreciate if the Chinese will help with the "pirate" threat and their is no need for us to get nasty with each other.

Ha,ha,ha,ha. Keep talking big.... When dealing with someone with a tunnel vision, I have to remind myself a mathematical truth; 0=1=0, 0 x 1=0, 0/1=0. Hopeless indeed.
