This time, Ban will discuss with the notorious Myanmar generals not about the 2.4 million cyclone victims (who barely receive any help from the state), but about 54 million Myanmar hostages and 2000 political prisoners inside the country.
The military junta in Burma has been cheating the Burmese people and the world for the last 46 years. It doesn't really effect the world and the UN but Burmese population has suffered for generations under this brutal military dictatorship. The country used to be the richest in the S E Asia, and once the 'Brightest Star of Asia', but has become the poorest nation with 3 millions refugees scattered all over the world, as the direct result of the military rule there. Another few millions of ethnic minorities hiding / languishing in the jungles as IDPs and tens of millions more in the country are facing chronic malnutrition and deadly diseases such as HIV/AIDS, Malaria, Drug resistant Tuberculosis, Hepertitis ,Dengue fever as part of daily life. The country's rich natural resources have been pocketed by the same generals and being used as "Bribery" to the neighbouring growing giants- CHINA, INDIA and THAILAND........Unless the UN finds CONCRETE and practical PUSH on the junta chief and comes out of it's usual non-binding resolutions, the Secretary General's visit in December will be nothing but another "UN's FAILURE".
Good Luck Mr.Ban ! You will be wasting your precious time meeting (bogus) organizations such as USDA, chaired by Gen Than Shwe, so-called '88 generation students(UOM) headed by Aye Lwin, Wun-Tha-Nu NLD of Dr.Soe Lin , Women's Affair Organization headed by generals' wives etc. all supervised under the strict control of the junta to serve his interest and you will be coming back even more confused than ever, achieving "Nothing". The junta Chief Than Shwe is more "cunning" than you think; the reason why he is in his position longer than you are in yours.
Burma/ Myanmar is UNIQUE in every sense.
... There is not another country on earth who's defacto junta simply "ignores" the results of the elections it held and imprisoned the elected MPs.
There is not another country on earth where the country's Nobel Prize laureate has been under house arrest for more than a decade.
There is not another country on earth who's leaders needed the UN General Secretary's personal persuation to accept international aid/ help so that it's 2.4 million disaster stricken people will be able to survive. A disaster which claimed 140,000 lives and the biggest in the country's living memory.
There is not another country on earth where the armed military forces rounded up, shot dead, jailed and beaten it's OWN clergy men to death by the hundreds, and still continues to hold the country's power.
However, there's another unique incident yesterday. In Rangoon, a couple in their 50's were sentenced to six years in prison guilty of "delaying in opening their house door" to a group of people who came for their student son at 1:00 am , without a search/arrest warrant.

PaukPhawGyi, but not for long.
