This is a necessary first step towards real global security for humanity. Let's just hope that the measure will result in real change.

Yeah and lets hope the US is the first to throw away all their nuclear bombs.

May be soon N. Korean and communist China will abandon their nukes just to make some daydreamers happy. The know how of nuke technology enable certain country to mount nuclear warhead at any given time. It is nice diplomatic words, but without substance. It is a "plastic" concept same the U.N. body. The U.N is becoming a joke, a gathering of many shameless dictators; if you will. It needs a reform with clear agenda and principle to follow through. It needed to be audited and dismember unqualified states from tarnishing its image. Hey, I am a dreamer too of different kind.

neverknow2: Yeah and lets hope the US is the first to throw away all their nuclear bombs.

I know! It's just not fair! I can barely type over the tears on my keyboard. :(.....

A huge waste of time and money. The document isn't worth the cost of the paper it's printed on. The UN is a toothless joke with absolutely no respected authority to implement any security-related resolution.

If the US was to destroy a nuclear weapon a week for over 200 years, we'd still have enough for a hundred years or so.

Striving for a nuclear free world is a noble thing to do. Resulting in a few more nations from obtaining nuclear weapons may become an end result.

I don't want Iran or North Korea or Israel to have nukes, but we can only try to stop or try to reduce the threat by persuasion. Let's work towards less nukes, not unilaterally. < :-)

Everyone is entitled to their opinion.

The reason people keep blowing themselves up to kill Americans is because the culture has your attitude. One rule for the US and another rule for the rest. No one stays on top forever. One day there will be a bomb so big, it will kill all of you. A very sad day that will be.

I for one say do not abandoned nukes. They are the only thing holding the peace in many parts of the world.

Will this usher in a new era of potential 'pre-emptive strikes' by the USA upon other states which it deems to be in contravention of this new way of thinking.

Sounds to me like Bush's old 'Your either with us or without us' motto dressed up in a sugar coating.

Thing is, it's very difficult to argue against this because it appears so very humanistic. However, it allows America, once again, to assume the moral high ground on the issue, thereby granting allowing it to take any action neccessary against anyone not iin accordance.

Actually, the un-inspected and non-NNPT compliant Israeli nukes should go first.

UNSC resolution is one thing, making nuclear weapons free world is altogether different thing.

World will not be nuclear free ,this means there is no nuclear power plants and nuclear weapons .

rajakumar Read closely: With President Barack Obama presiding, the U.N. Security Council on Thursday unanimously endorsed a sweeping strategy aimed at halting the spread of nuclear weapons and ultimately eliminating them, to usher in a world with “undiminished security for all.” Nobody's talking about eliminating nuclear power.

Nuclear power might be the best thing yet to save the planet from greenhouse gas emissions.
