Top military officer flew to Europe to talk to the commander in the Afghanistan war about how many troops he needs to turn around the faltering campaign
What a biased leading paragraph. The campaign in Afghanistan is not faltering. It is just always stuck in neutral. Furthermore, it will continue to remain in neutral until people start accepting simple facts.
Firstly, overall troop numbers do not matter if a large part of such numbers are comprised of REMFs.
Secondly, politics and warfare should not be mixed. If the aim is to beat the Taliban, then the US and allied forces need to go for the throat. Let the politicians worry about the home front and the political will of the people. Commanders in theater should just get on with the job at hand, irrespective of the price to be paid in blood. That is an issue to be debated in Washington and not in the dugouts of Afghanistan.
Thirdly, the long boot of the US needs to be further inserted up the nether regions of the Pakistanis so that operations are constantly waged on those who would shelter the Taliban. If the Taliban and its allies want total war, the the US and its allies should oblige. Take off the kid gloves and take these clowns to the mat. The sooner this is done the better.

Couldn't have said it better. Soldiers sign up to fight, and whilst I'm not a pro-war or gung-ho type in the slightest, even I can't understand the media's obsession with dead troop numbers when they're doing a job that badly needs doing.
