Your point about power isn't clear to me. I have no idea whether you are saying that America asked China to bend to American power or whether you are saying something else. It is somewhat clear that you want to get into a p&ss&ng contest about this, however, and that would seem to account for the escalation of your hostility. Where is that coming from?
It seems to me that both countries are exercising power, China more so than the US. I don't see that there is much that the US could do had China been determined to continue the detention of these American (and other) nationals. You might see that differently, but I don't think you've stated so.
A little more sincerity, if you please. I think you knew that we were not "on the same side" when you posted. Your bluff was called and you respond with another insincere post.
I don't think laws are "arbitrary" in China. I think they are probably few and far between in comparison with laws in the US. The lack of detail in China leads to arbitrary enforcement. Arbitrary enforcement, however, is not a uniquely Chinese problem.
Why should China respect American power? What do you imagine the consequences would have been of China continuing her prosecution of lawbreakers? I don't really see that there is much that the US could have done.
Let them growl but recent events have shown they can't be the police of the world, no matter how much posters here say otherwise.
US forces are stretched and it is hurting their economy, nothing new to people in europe/asia as we seen it before. Empires across the globe and ages fell to those same things.
Right now the US don't have the strenght(both military and political) to dictate anything to China or Russia(even without iraq, etc) and don't give me the nukes that would be political/etc suicide and put the US lower than the Islamic fundies.
USA is still in top for now not so sure about 5 or 10yrs in the future.
TheNewZen; The US is not a "paper tiger". If we were an aggresive nation,w e would have destroyed Russia and China by now. We are incredibly strong, but we are also the worlds most respected diplomats.
In China we have used diplomacy first. It shall work, as you liberals shall see.
The US economy is strong and we are using a small amount of troops in our liberations and peace keeping missions.
The US ensures it is always the world no1 powerhouse, and shall continue to do so. The activists will be ok, China will be admonished and life goes on.
Back up your talk with actions, nuke russia, china, iran, etc.
Won't happen because you can't and even if you did you would be more isolated than cuba.
You got to see past the all the political talk.
The real countries interactions are on a personal and economic level and NO goverment will interfere there much.
China has replaced the USA as the No.1 buyer from japan. Forget the political stuff chinese/japanese ties got stronger.

Alinsky4prez,
Good! It's always great to find someone else who supports China's right to detain and even imprison people who break its laws on its territory.

My point is clear:
Its not about forgiveness. Its about power.
Your use of forgiveness is sloppy, and ultimately dangerous.
You should be more precise in your language.

Not bend. Respect.

IMO, the US has been proven as a "paper tiger".
Let them growl but recent events have shown they can't be the police of the world, no matter how much posters here say otherwise.

You seem to have forgotten about the wheat shipments from the USA to Russia during the Cold war. Yeah, you fed your own enemy.
Economic ties are the strongest and if you attack the rest of the world those will be cut.

Like I said.
Go ahead and show us your power crush the rest of the world. Come on show us your great power.
And who will you sell your goods to when the rest of the world is gone?
TheNewZen at 01:10 PM JST - 30th August
Ok, back on topic.
China no-longer recognizes the USA as a super-power so they won't listen. For the simple reason that the USA is no military thread to them.
The power game has shifted and China plus India will be the new super-powers soon.
moderateguy2008 at 01:25 PM JST - 30th August
I agree with the conservative guys.
I cannot see India and China reaching he potential of the USA. Their cultures are not as developed as ours regarding the work ethic.
We can work to the worlds highest quality and our employees are second to none.
China shall feel the effect of soft or hard power, if our orders are not complied with.
China is arepressive state, and must rerlease innocents, America will pressure for this, and will achieve it.

Because that's the name of the game. Jeez, sometimes I really wonder about you...
