Keep them there, much more work needs to be done to contain Islam and its terrorists. Plan B involves Iran.

Whatever happened to the promise to pull all U.S. troops out of Iraq within 16 months of Obama taking office?

Looks like the Army is making this decision, if it happens. Not Obama. But just incase that's not suitable enough. < :-)

Obama last month announced the United States' plan to withdraw most of its troops from Iraq by the end of August 2010. A residual force of between 35,000 to 50,000 troops will remain until December 31, 2011. There are 142,000 American troops in Iraq now.

Troop levels have been reduced from 142K to 98K.

This was an Iraqi worry when the plan was signed.

Iraqi officials say they are confident Obama will not jeopardize Iraq's security by ordering a hasty withdrawal.

Obama's plan as he laid it out to the Marines. He touched on not losing the gains we achieved. It's always been a plan B.

As a candidate for President, I made clear my support for a timeline of 16 months to carry out this drawdown, while pledging to consult closely with our military commanders upon taking office to ensure that we preserve the gains we’ve made and protect our troops. Those consultations are now complete, and I have chosen a timeline that will remove our combat brigades over the next 18 months.

Sarge - "Whatever happened to the promise to pull all U.S. troops out of Iraq within 16 months of Obama taking office?"

Sarge's support for this failed war continues to drag America further into a financial abyss.

    Just words. Just speeches.

    RomeoRamen - wrong again.

It was and is a signed agreement.

According to who? You? Please provide a link showing an agreement was signed between Iraq and America that all U.S. troops will be withdrawn from Iraq by noon, May 20 (16 months from the date Obama took office).

    Happy hunting.

Also, google 'U.S.-Iraq Withdrawal/Status of Forces Agreement: Issues for Congressional Oversight' by the Congressional Research Service.

But only if you're up to it. :-)

Heh, so, in other words, you have nothing to back your claim in your 3:25 p.m. post that an agreement was signed between Iraq and America that all U.S. troops will be withdrawn from Iraq by noon, May 20 (16 months from the date Obama took office).

    Next?

Romeo - lay back and take some time to check the info in my post right above your last one. :-)

Iraq has no WMD's. No reason to be there. Not one more coalition force member should lose their life there.

Any good military command develops a contingency plan just in case. Doesn't mean they'd need it, but better to have it than none at all. Who cares if it takes 16 months, 20 months, or 24 months, so long as it's the best move the troops could do.
