"Aware of voter outrage about the bonuses, Republicans were reluctant in Friday’s debate to push back, even though they voted overwhelmingly against the bill."

Typical Republican cowardice and hypocrisy... they 'believe' in the values they believe in, unless it jeopardizes their position. We're seeing the same thing with the Repubs in every facet of politics, from this issue to confirmation of Sodomayor.

Anyway, good on the government for passing this bill. It's ridiculous that banks and big companies are bailed out and the money funneled directly into the pockets of the already rich as bonuses for doing their jobs. They should simply be fired if they don't do them well, bottom line. They are already rewarded with massive paycheques.

Can't we at least now get politicians pays and bonuses decreased as well as putting stricter rules on business dealings while in office?

The Wall Stree Journal this week had a story on the difficult adjustment for former Lehman employees under their new boss Nomura. One issue was jealousy and resentment over the differences in pay. Division chiefs for Nomura are paid around $250,000/year while their Lehman counterparts made tens of millions. It is impossible to justify the Wall Street excess.
As for smithinjapan's comments, a better example of cowardice and hypocrisy is Obama blaming Republicans for holding up health care "reform" when Democrats control the House and have a filibuster proof majority in the Senate.

I'm with you on those suggestions -- on the bonuses at the very least.
