Barack Obama said tonight, those who did crimes have to pay for them. Anybody, no one is immune.
Let's get the troops into Afghanistan and in the business of cleaning up the country so Afghanistan troops can take over and our troops can come home. < :-)
****nothing new, when there is a war, there is the u.s. for me its there new play ground where in they can use their fire power capabilities to eliminate the taliban forces and al queada. then, after afghanistan........ where? they should try china.
"amid some predictions that the U.S. will be be there ( Afghanistan ) for at least a decade"
What! With the government running massive red ink and borrowing from China to pay for food stamps and welfare for poor Americans? This is outrageous! I demand that President Obama resign immediately, and a truly liberal Democrat that makes the current president look like a conservative take over!
We would not have such a horrendous mess in Afghanistan if we had used all the resources diverted to Iraq to finish the job of defeating the enemy, stabilizing the country and rebuilding Afghanistan into a productive economy without a dependency on opium. But the Republicans and conservatives wanted to be the heroes of the world and liberate Iraq. So much for defeating the ones who were responsible for the 09.11.2001 attacks on American soil. sarge, you and your ideologues let Osama bin Laden get away with the crime of the century in the U.S.A.
Now we are left to clean up your messes and you are still bitching. Your faux concerns are tedious. Of course Obama will do the right thing and fight hard where the fight was previously not given the proper resources. Of course like any virus that is attacked and allowed to regroup after an insufficient effort it will take countless additional resources to make up for the past failures. However, Obama promised to get a huge flux of additional troops into Afghanistan and of course he is fulfilling his promise as we debate on this thread. I have heard estimates as high as 10 - 15 years of continuing struggle. It is a damn shame when we initially made good progress. Although the people you voted for dropped the ball when the CIA was in Afghanistan before the Armed Forces and we had a good chance to capture or kill Ossama, that would have been excusable if we did not drop the ball a second time by trying to be the heroes of the world and fight a war we had no business fighting; at the very least as long as our enemy was still potent. Sarge, brag about Iraq all you will but Bush did not keep his promise to get the enemies of the 09.11.2001 attacks.
The mission in Iraq will be incredibly difficult. We have lost the short term goodwill we initially established at the beginning of the war. Let's not forget that Bush was negotiating with the Taliban at the end of his administration. He was correct in doing so. We must combine a political solution with a military solution to be successful. Thank goodness we have Obama who understands such principles immediately. The proof will be his massive troop deployment and also his current envoy, Richard Holbrook to the region.
What the hell ? Is this the "change" Obama talked about before becoming president ? More US troops fighting overseas ! I can't help but feel I've been takin advantage of. I mean for months, years, decades it seems the press... and the usual cast of characters here at Japantoday have been mouthing off about the evils of the Dubya administration and it's unnecessary involvement in wars overseas. Now Obama does the same damn thing ! I thought he was gonna bring the troops home... all the troops ! Leave Afghanistan to the Brits and French. Hell they created that mess, they can clean it up.
"We would not have such a horrendous mess in Afghanistan if we had used all the resources diverted to Iraq to finish the job of defeating the enemy, stabilizing the country and rebuilding Afghanistan into a productive economy"
Yeh goodonkey and the rest of the Middle East would have been straightened out a lot quicker if France had agreed to send troops in to take out "terror training funding Saddam Hussein" 7 years ago. And if the UN had stopped pouting and had helped train Iraqi military forces to protect their own, there's no telling how more efficient and generally peaceful the whole of the ME would be today. The US should cut all ties with both France and the UN.. they have cost Americans hundreds of lives and the Iraqis probably thousands !
That one statement shows your absolute void of knowledge about Afghanistan. The war in Afghanistan is between the Taliban and the United States. They attacked us. They didn't attack France or England, they attacked the U. S.
I'm sorry but speaking as a Brit, I didn't know France and we invaded afganistan, I know we followed the bloodlust idiot bush there but the queen finally reigned in that pillock Blair and had him stop most of our murderous support of bushes search for more money.
the French were correct to refuse involvement, I wish I could say the uk did too, but I can not so I'll hang my head in shame, and gladly shed a tear for every innocent who died or was maimed.
Maybe we won't succeed. Although our mission is somewhat different. We just want to end the terrorist activities that Afghanistan's leadership had directed towards the United States in the past. Russia wanted to conquer Afghanistan and govern it from Moscow. I have no disillusionment about the near impossible difficulties we face. I know that there are figures out there that around 70% of the Afghans trust the Taliban more than the United States. We can certainly claim that we have no intent to rule their country. I think it is still possible to achieve peace and accomplish our objectives. I believe we were correct in going after a government and the limited people that were allowing the training grounds for terrorism against the United States. History will show that I was correct when I said we were in a very good position initially after destroying a massive portion of the Taliban. The Afghani people were showing a decent amount of goodwill. If we used half the resources that were diverted to Iraq we could have built infrastructure and other economic and social benefits for the Afghans. It is my opinion that the Afghans are not so unique a people that they cannot respond to positive achievements with a positive change toward their previous history of supporting terrorism. After all their terrorist associations are short lived. We conducted a preemptive strike (alleged preemptive based on lies or bad data) on Iraq. In the case of Afghanistan we knew Ossama bin Laden resided there when we attacked. It is well documented that the Afghanistan government supported the Taliban. We were defending our nation.
Wow we got some history illiterates around don't we. Umm guys, my reference to France and Britain is quite simple as both nations are guilty of sowing the seeds of discontent that have led Afghanistan to where it is today. Fact is you would have no Taliban if it weren't for the Brits misguided attempts to colonize the region in the 19th century. Study up a bit would ya !
History books spell it out as such...
"During the nineteenth century, following the Anglo-Afghan wars (fought 1839–42, 1878–80, and lastly in 1919) and the ascension of the Barakzai dynasty, Afghanistan saw much of its territory and autonomy ceded to the United Kingdom. The UK exercised a great deal of influence, and it was not until King Amanullah Khan acceded to the throne in 1919 that Afghanistan re-gained complete independence over its foreign affairs (see “The Great Game”). During the period of British intervention in Afghanistan, ethnic Pashtun territories were divided by the Durand Line. This would lead to strained relations between Afghanistan and British India – and later the new state of Pakistan – over what came to be known as the Pashtunistan debate. The longest period of stability in Afghanistan was between 1933 and 1973, when the country was under the rule of King Zahir Shah."
As for the French ? Well... once again, guilty as charged ! The plight of the middle east, and the surrounding regions, can be laid at the doorsteps of both England and France, as these were the two nations responsible for dividing up the property lines between countries after WWII ! What a shame they didn't have the common sense to consider ethnic diversity when doing so. The middle east has been a powder keg of hatred ever since... and you all wanna skip ahead to the war on terrorism as the first stage of this long and drawn out conflict ? Ha, how quickly we forget !

The Russians were whumped in Afghanistan after 10 long years - and they had far more advanced weapons.
What makes America think they will succeed? They also have far more advanced weapons.

" French were correct to refuse involvement,"
Nah, that was the corporate greed-fest in Iraq. They'e in Iraq, with the most troops behind the US il me semble.
Both Iraq and Afghanistan now have Deciderships.....but there's a lot of work remaining for a success story from either.

I thought you couldn't force democracy through the barrel of a gun? Yet people are here supporting more troops in Afghanistan?
By the way, what's the cost so far of this war?
