If only the aids ships were to leave... only for the next to come are ships to blow the junta into smithereens. It's the only dream I can have that helps me sleep at night.
Smith, Sushi - would you like to see the U.S. military kick the junta out of power and deliver aid to these poor people? That, of course, would result in some innocent people being killed...
The Junta has once again shown themselves to be a bunch of goons with no concern for their citizens. Does anyone really believe the US was planning to invade? Just a convenient excuse to maintain secrecy as they always do. I guess it's true when a populace lives with fear and starvation it makes it harder for them to revolt. I'm not really a believer but I'd like to think that there is a special little place in hell reserved for Than Shwe and his friends.
Positive news for Myanmar, locals will now carry out aid-work without fearing foreign invetion, speed may be slow but steady..
Just because the lives of some14some's family and friends are not at risk, this heartless chinese is writing anti-western , anti-humanitarian remarks here. Every intelligent person knows that TIME means HUMAN LIVES in this kind of situation.Locals are not capable of carrying out such a huge task , therefore 1.2 millions are still beyond the reach of aid workers.
Actually, generals in Burma/Myanmar knows very well that the int'l community needs their cooperation to be able to save millions of Burmese lives. But saving lives is not important for the generals ,instead, they chose to play with people's lives and decided to claim WIN over the West. Infact, the US Naval did not even want to overthrow the junta, because they could have done it (years ago) if they wanted to. Need not wait for the cyclone.
Burmese general's "Bunker Mentality" is getting in the way of saving lives in cyclone hit delta. This very mentality have made the country a failed state. Gen.Than Shwe, a high school drop-out has very little knowledge of international relations. His backward ways of thinking (plus) his illiterate wife's greed and voodoo beliefs make things even harder to progress.
It is safer for an impassive Than Shwe to allow hundreds of thousands of villagers in the Irrawaddy delta region to die rather than permitting a US relief mission to save them—a deadly decision indeed.
Than Shwe knows full well that millions of Burmese wait in hope for the arrival of US warships, and not only for the relief supplies they would bring.
some14some; if your family members are in the delta region, awaiting for live-saving aid, you would not have such view. Paranoid, power hungry generals and you have no empathy / sympathy towards the dying innocent children of Myanmar ...

Now that is the tragic part of all the troubles that world has to bear
and your frustration lies there. Never too late, do it now and free millions of people suffering in Myanmar.
Burma, once the world's 7th largest rice exporter, is now set to see 40+% of its harvest fail. How will the Burmese be able to feed themselves if the generals continue to reject aid?
some14some said, "Positive news for Myanmar, locals will now carry out aid-work without fearing foreign intervention, speed may be slow but steady".
some14some; how carelessly naiive you are.It only proves you do not know the burning desires of Myanmar majority. Locals are expecting foreign intervention desperately, since they have very slim chance of staying alive under these "military thugs" who have been building a country for themselves within the country of Myanmar, in the name of "self-preservation".
Recently the international media reported that the regime had approved all pending visas for UN aid workers. But this doesn’t mean that the devastated country will soon be crawling with hundreds or thousands of competent, compassionate and fully equipped aid workers. The actual number of pending visas was 45. No guarantee that they will be able to go to delta region.
And here’s more “good” news: Save the Children, Medecins sans Frontieres and the United Nations Children’s Fund have just sent in another 14 aid workers.
Than Shwe is now clearly committing humanitarian crimes. It is time for Burma’s democratic forces inside and outside the country to think of a better strategy to remove the Than Shwe regime. They have to show that there is an alternative to Than Shwe.
The international community and neighboring countries must also continue to pressure the regime and help refugees in the delta. They must speak with one united voice. The Than Shwe regime is not sustainable.
Without Than Shwe, we will be able to save many lives and rebuild a new Burma
