"U.S. and Afghan soldiers linked up with Marines"
We must all be grateful for these brave people who put their lives on the line to protect us from the scumbags who would torture and kill us without hesitation or remorse.

From my understanding this will not be easy. These people are poopy famers and have little or no alternative source of income. They work together with the Taliban to cultivate and supply opium/heroin.
Obviously the US want to cut off this income supply from the Taliban hence this massive operation. Game on!

Blame it on the poopy famers!

If this is really their goal the they have already lost. The town will be destroyed in the fighting.
NATO officials say the goal is to seize the town quickly and re-establish Afghan government authority, bringing public services in hopes of winning support of the townspeople once the Taliban are gone.

Unless, classical tactic, the Taliban have already gone, mixed in with the general populace, leaving some suicide contingents behind to cover for them.

The other day we were getting ready for "the attack." Now we are "cutting off escape" roots. God I hate this arm-chair strategic analysis that is churned out ad-nauseum by press pool journalists. Just get on with the job, bring the enemy to bear, and ELIMINATE THEM.

It's a job son, get over it.

The name Taliban has a similar ring to it as the Culligan Man. Let's flush them out and clear the pipes.

By giving up the advantage of surprise, NATO forces are inviting much higher casualties. The world has really changed: if this had been Vietnam the entire province would have been leveled by B-52 raids.

Lol.Surely cannot be real. And the US have conveniently released lots of new 9/11 photos to soften the bad press that the battle of Marjah will engender.

An alternative view of this assault is citing: "US to Launch Fallujah-style Attack in Afghanistan" and goes on: "As US and British troops prepare to attack the town of Marjah in Afghanistan’s Helmand Province, military commanders and the media are openly comparing the operation to the November 2004 siege of Fallujah, one of the bloodiest war crimes of the Iraq war. The operation in central Helmand province, long an area of intense resistance to the US-led occupation, will constitute the largest military offensive since Washington invaded the country in October 2001. At least 15,000 troops are expected to lay siege to the Helmand river valley town, which has 80,000 inhabitants and is said by the US military to be a stronghold of the Taliban. A total of 125,000 people live in the district around Marjah, which is an agricultural center 350 miles west of Kabul. The population has been swelled by Afghans fleeing villages occupied by US Marines last summer, following President Barack Obama’s order shortly after he took office to send 21,000 more troops into Afghanistan. US Marines, frustrated and enraged over casualties suffered at the hands of an unseen enemy who is able to attack and then blend back into the local population, will be unleashed against the town in a violent military assault, with predictable results. Brigadier General Larry Nicholson, commander of the US Marines in southern Afghanistan, spelled out the character of the upcoming offensive. Those found in Marjah would have three options. “One is to stay and fight and probably die,” he said. “The second one is to make peace with his government and reintegrate.” The third would be to attempt to escape, “In which case we’ll probably have some people out there waiting on them as well.” “We're going to go in big,” said Nicholson, commander of the 2nd Marine Expeditionary Brigade. “I’m not looking for a fair fight,” he added. So, expect the usual massacre of innocents caught in crossfire. Plus ca change...."*They created a desolation, and they called it peace." *-- Tacitus. *"Kill 'em all. Let God sort them out!" *-- Attributed to Saint Dominic, Pope Innocent III, and other holy men. God bless Ameristan!

polypals. Don't do it. You know the US forces are not limited to Christian, Jewish or Buddhist. You know that they are a multitude of people from atheists to ardent believers, of many religions including mainstream Islam. You know that the Taliban would love people to think the approaching forces are Christian. But that is not rue, and this is not a religious war. The Afghan government is Muslim. The villagers are caught between two political ideologies, Muslim Democracy and radical Muslim Fundamentalism.

Lol siege of fallujah a crime of the iraq war? hilarious!
Any proof of this? Like does the author actually personally know that the soldiers there are frustrated? I love how the author is stating opinion as facts with no proof to back them up. My favorite part is how you gave us a link to a homepage and not to the actual article.
All I can say is that it is about time that the NATO and Afghan forces retake this city from the Taliban.

Referring, among other things, to conspiracy theory's about his Christian name, and other personal, with similar sounding Christian names.

I can tell you this, the USA will not be using snowballs, or Rodolph the red noised reindeer.
Attention: to anyone who knows a Taliban, lives or works with one, jogs or plays squash with a Taliban, in this city, take the next week, or so, trying to stay alive, and finding new friends.
Them Talieban are toast.
This is prime territory, a base hit to Iran.

Reading the headline I just thought US & Aghan troops gave their opponents a telephone call... Hello, Taliban stronghold?

Whenever I have seen photos of Taliban fighters they always look like heavily armed Afghanis, as apposed to lightly armed Afghanis, which are in fact the norm. So how exactly are the US troops meant to distinguish one from the other? Or is that reasoning only meant for the press release and in reality they will shoot anybody holding a weapon and then call what’s left a Taliban fighter?
Don’t get me wrong here; I am on the Americans side in this one. I think a few B52 raids would act as a sort of re-education programme the Taliban supporters would be hard pressed to ignore. There is a strange sort of hopeless frustration that sets in when you have nobody to fight against and the only sight of the other side is a little silver dot in the sky, which you can do nothing about. No, it didn’t work in Vietnam, but then the North had China and Russia helping them, in Afghanistan it could well have a much more meaningful effect.

So the US gets a taliban strong hold, what do you have? some building and some rocks with everyone detesting your presence. What`s the mission objective again? These wars seem to have life of their own with no end in sight.
nandakandamanda , i wasn`t refering to the soldiers as much as the way the war is sold in the bible belt of america and afghanistan. to each the other is a terrorist. and gw bush did say "crusade"
