"the Iraqi government may ask some U.S. troops to remain behind as trainers after the Dec 31, 2011 deadline"
Sorry, you said you wanted us outta here, we're outta here! And why does this Dec 31, 2011 deadline date keep appearing? Hasn't the man who pledged to withdraw all U.S. troops 16 months after he takes office been elected? Move that deadline up to May 31, 2010!

He certainly has, thank Christ. Problem is, the moron bush is still in charge for another few weeks.
Since when have you ever cared about what the Iraqis want?

Anyone who thinks Obama is going to pull the troops out of Iraq is still living in Sucker Land. The Democrats won back the Congress in 2006 mostly because so many Americans wanted to end a war they finally realized they had been lied into. Two years later and the troops are still there. Obama, like the Democratic run Congress, is beholden to the same evil powers that Bush is beholden too. U.S. troops will remain in Iraq until America's economy can no longer support it and the American empire goes the way of the British empire.

Who are they? Do they have a secret handshake? If you will not name them it can only mean you too do their bidding.

While I go along with the general argument I wouldn't be using the word 'evil' to describe the ruling elites. Every nation has them. No point in mystifying them.
They are basically beholden to their need to maintain their position of wealth and power. Within the context of economic conditions, when times are good they can afford to be benevolent but when times are tough, like now they get mighty reactionary, extracting profit from the workers and grabbing for what ever resources they see they think they have the priviliged right and the power to snatch away from the rest of the humankind.
Wars between nations and the crushing of democratic rights within each nation are the principle tools these elites use. There is a cold logic behind the method but not a lot of rationality (its all short term goals) and certainly no mysticism.

So why can't you name even one of "them" ?

The Iraqis are well on their way to being able to handle their own security. By the end of 2011, Obama will be able to complete the U.S. withdrawal and he will take credit for the victory, which is ironic, being as how if he'd had his way in 2003, Iraq would still be in the clutches of Saddam Hussein.

You do realize that when you use phrases like "if he'd had his way in 2003, Iraq would still be in the clutches of Saddam Hussein", you like desperate, defeated, and foolish, right?

Instead of keeping U.S. troops in Iraq for possibly more than 10 years to train the Iraqi forces, I think it would be better to bring some of the best and brightest of the Iraqis to the U.S. and then the U.S. military can train the trainers.
Because of language and cultural differences, I think it would be easier and more effective for the majority of Iraqi forces to receive their training from Iraqi officers, instead of American officers.
The U.S. military already has a system in place to teach officers from other countries on how to train their own personnel. I think we should get the Iraqis into this program ASAP.

You have the SOFA, you have our opinions, you have a new president not in office yet and we have another 36 days and 11 hours till the change in office.
Then we'll have a different mentality when Barack get's with the Iraqi leaders and goes from "Stay the Course" to "Let's bring our troops home." < :-)
