Whales would like quieter US Navy sonar, so that they can navigate more easily....

Whales making them happy, what will it take.

Slower ship, quieter sonar, cleaner seas, cleaner air, quieter afterburners, quieter turbine jet engines and many other things.

The population of planet is now 6,719,000 people I guess we humans have become the whales/elephants/tigers/bears/wolves, killing all other earth species with our big boy machine toys via ships/airships/land machines/cars.

The future generation may only see many species as cartoon characters on disney channels/cartoon network.

Great to see the US showing concern about the well being of these noble creatures. Way to go!!!

Frankly I don't think that slowing down steaming speed from say 15k down to 10k is going to make much of a difference on the whale population. However, the savings in fuel consumption from slow-steaming will probably be enough of an enticement to get everyone to accomodate.

endangered species needs our help,” said retired Navy Vice Admiral Conrad C Lautenbacher, the agency’s administrator.

Aren't these the same guys who have been killing whales with sonar???

And what does speed have to do with it? It's the propeller at the back end of the ship that does all the damage, and as long as that thing is turning it will kill, so what does speed have to do with it?

OgieDoggie; if a ship is travelling too fast, a whale may have difficulty avoiding a collision.

Just to let you know Confederate2008 - I have been aboard ships when we came across whales and they don't sit in the water with signs on them letting you know they are there. They will cruise about 10 feet under the water and you don't see them until you are passing them and you see that big dark shadow under the water which is about the size of your ship (it does give you a creepy feeling seeing that shadow and its almost the size of your ship).

Then again it could have been a Russian or Chineese subs we were seeing.
