Hopefully this will be a lesson for the people at Miss Universe Japan. This campaign was filled with blunders from day one, from the ridiculous costume, Miyasaka herself saying she had to diet (??? then why were you chosen?), the photos taken with Aso, the world' most unpopular leader and her lack of English ability.
I was rooting for Puerto Rico all the way, and she finished in 5th place. She was much better looking and polished than the other two latins. If anything, i thought Austraia or Kosovo were the real competition.
I was very impressed by the stiff competition this year. Three latin girls again in the top 5 is a shot across the bow to newcomer countries who think only good looks and nice hair is what it takes to win.
Yes, the Japanese girl didn't even make it to the last 15. You could see her disappointment during the event. I think Ligron made a mistake of going to old-school designers with avant garde designs. She should have farmed out all her work to people she could trust. There's no doubt she knows what she is doing, but she needs to learn how to work the system.
Puerto Rico will be coming very strong next year. There are new managers which have a lot of experience. Guaranteed to win next year...
Miss Venezuela isn't bad looking but I wonder what percentage of her looks have been enhanced with cosmetic surgery. Maybe in the future they should have two catergories / competitions: "natural beauty" and "Surgically enhanced". At least one or two of the judges would have to be a surgeons, so they could verify if the women have had any surgery.
The J-gal must be very disheartened. With one winner and one first runner-up in just the past couple of years, not even making the last 15 is quite a slap. Her marketablity/endorsement-value just dropped dramatically. That acne commercial she's on cable right now with may be her last.
During a question-and-answer segment with the five top finalists, Fernandez said she believed women have overcome obstacles such as hitting the proverbial glass ceiling.
Most all of these contestents are very attractive and competitive women. But this is a beauty contest so it's all pretty subjective; I don't think it really matters who wins. It's a nice tradition though and something for each country to take pride in.
i heard a rumor that the accounting firm made a mistake and that the top 5 order was reversed... This would mean that my predictions for the top 5 were right on the money.

Perhaps it's time for Ligron to move on?

rugby fan: tru dat. last year's Venezuela was really much better looking.
nowadays though, nearly all of them are "upgraded"...
I do favor the 100% natural way. if you can't win with what you were born with then tough luck.

She's obviously never been to Japan

I read that the Venezuelan beauties (though not limited to them only) usually have some sort of PS.

Nearly 100% of women are operated now. In some countries, going for plastic surgery is just as common as going to the dentist.
These girls are pushing the envelope and its a huge payback on the investment.

Keeping my fingers crossed...
