Better to to be cautious- if all the engines stopped because of ash you could be stuck up there for days.

This totally stinks, but I agree it's better to be safe than sorry. If one of these selfish airline companies got their way and could fly through the ash, then crashed, there would be a LOT of anger, not to mention lawsuits, and questions about why on earth they were allowed to operate when the possible dangers were known.
I don't want that kind of accident to have to occur to prove them wrong, and I would rather they insist they are right but not have the chance to find out.

To do what exactly ? Stop the volcano from erupting ? Typical British establishment senior management/ political reaction. Walsh will exert pressure on the government to relax safety regulations.
