The three-minute commemoration — part of an official three days of mourning — gave the government a chance to recognize and channel the grief of millions who have watched the disaster play out in unusually free coverage by state media.
I've been really impressed by the Chinese response to a disaster of this magnitude. The government mobilized all its resources including the PLA, which has long functioned in National Guard capacity when the situation warranted, as well as the Chinese people. Recently seen on the world stage as shrill nationalists, this brought out their compassionate side. It was unexpected; helping non-family members is not part of their cultural tradition. Nor is volunteerism encouraged by the government since it lacks control over such efforts. But many ordinary people living in unaffected areas have done whatever they can to help the victims.
UK's Gordon Brown gave his opinion in one word.
Chinese government's effort to save it's people's lives as "MAGNIFICENT"
.........But,.........
Burma/Myanmar government's effort to save it's cyclone victims as "INHUMAN".
