Can someone please tell me why this is important? Why not report the number of penguins in US zoos? Why not report the projected number of homeless people next year or the number of broccoli eaters?

The US census asks people to report their own race, or NO race, if they prefer. Racial discrimination is against the law. The color of their skin ostensibly has nothing to do with what language they speak, and certainly not their citizenship or capabilities, so of what use is this information?

"As a result, the Census Bureau said the projections should used mostly as a guide."

    A guide for what?

They're not counting the kids that are mixed ethnicity (caucasian/black/asian/hispanic/native american etc) either. Not that I really care, but maybe just maybe it will reduce the number of crazy white supremacists freaks around here.

Among other things, consider it a guide for redrawing the political map. There is an indisputable link between demographics and representation in voting districts (among other things). It should be obvious to anyone who has walked down a street in Charlotte, North Carolina (for example) that los Estados Unidos and Mexico are merging into a gigantic Norteamericano entity. The U.S. will almost certainly have a vice president named Jose (or Rita) by 2020. The writing is on the wall.

I am close thinking this sort of information should be surpressed. One of the huge flaws is that mixed people are invariably viewed as something other than white. Our president is an excellent example. He is half white but everybody says he is black. Tiger Woods is half-Thai and only a quarter black, but so many say he is black too, and that despite the fact that Tiger does not even claim to be black.

Oh beelz, that is poppycock. Hispanics used to be Reagan Republicans nationwide. Now look what has happened. Political map? Nah. The Republican party redraws its own map through inciting xenophobia and racism. And if the US has a president named Jose or Rita, so what? Not just thinking people... I think MOST people don't vote by race. Get with it, people would not vote for Kennedy because he was not Protestant, now Lieberman wins and he is not even a Christian. People would elect aliens from space if they could do the job.

Besides, if you saw the name George Washington on a ballot, would you automatically assume he is black? THERE is some ironic humor there for you.

Ironchef has got it right. The Census Office has to do its job, but it is just bean counting that, if present patterns hold, will not come to mean very much at all.

I agree with Beelzebub. These statistics are used for a lot of stuff. Forecasting political, urban sprawl forecasting and military strategy in planning future military enlistees numbers. < :-)

You can have only 1/16th black blood and still check off the I Am Black box, even if you have blue eyes and blond hair. Silly stats.

I for one welcome our new alien overlords!!!

Nonsense, I imagine back in the 1800's they were running panicking articles about the growing "kraut" population and how it would be the end of the US. Who cares! Hispanics are welcome to the US.

Who cares! Hispanics are welcome to the US." Thank you! Anyway, for several posters, I hate to break it to you, but the American/English does not have it totally correct. There are a lot of us who vote republican as many of us are conservative to a great degree. Most of us are Roman Catholic, have a high regard for family... and we really don't have an issue with inter-marriage. Many of us will consider ourselves white even if we have the darkest pigment around because of culture and there are times we consider ourselves black or amongst black even if we have the whitest of pigmentation. I think the American media has only focused on those of us who've come in recently and also the much of the gang problem (that has plagued other ethnicities including Italians, Irish, Jews, etc..). You really need not focus on that as much as you are being taught. Also, for those of us who regard ourselves as Hispanic American, please bear in mind that we have a high regard for patriotism and in some cases more than whites on a grand scheme of things. This article, I think is trying to paint a more sinister picture in a subtle way.

Not an expert - but I would say no.

I think of Asian heritage in the US, Filipinos come in a clear number 1, Chinese next and Indians/Pakistanis at 3rd. The Japanese dont seem to have such a notable diaspora around the world due to its high living standards. As I say - I am not an expert on these matters, just going by the impact on US culture.
