Karzai just can't be trusted. Time to show him what life can be like without US funds.

Is Robert Gibbs calling Hamid Karzai a liar?

djuice: "Karzai just can't be trusted. Time to show him what life can be like without US funds."

Agreed. But then you'd have the war mongers up in arms, so to speak, since it would be a black eye on the US reputation in particular (all that support for all those years!). Ah, but wait... they can always blame it on Obama.

Seriously, though, the problem with cutting aid to Karzai is that the man clearly plays to favourites. When the Taliban was putting more pressure on him a year or so ago he was giving in to them, even declaring a part of Afghanistan a safe haven for them (until the US threatened him for it). He then demanded more US support or he would cave. So, if the US cut their support he would more than willingly continue to accept it from Iran, and probably other sources, and simply give in to the Taliban, etc.

“We’re not in the big bags of cash business,” President Barack Obama’s press secretary, Robert Gibbs, told reporters Tuesday.

    it's all wire transfer.

"Big bags of money" was once called "arms" for contra rebels in Nicaragua, too. I'm sure that the US claimed (at the time, before it became public knowledge they were funding rebels - i.e. terrorists), "We're not in the big truckloads of arms business.", either.

I thought the only place you'd see bags of money was in B-grade crime movies. :-)

Really? A la Karzai, L. Paul Bremmer was responsible for the loss of $1.2 billion. That's at least one bag. How many schools back home would THAT fund? Or hospitals? Or highways repair? America: wake UP! You've been had, big time!

WASHINGTON — The White House is disputing Afghan President Hamid Karzai’s assertion that Washington provides him with “bags of money.”

    It was suitcases, not bags.

I think that's what people call a metaphor. Look it up. It's great. It'll even make coffee for you in the morning.

Considering the lack of accountability shown in Iraq with money disappearing, this wouldn't surprise me in the slightest.

been happening forever. CIA brought bags of money to the northen coallition in Afghanistan to get them to fight the taliban, CIA gave tones of money to mullah Sadr in Iraq to get him to call of his jihad. Money can buy anything.
