The pressure is on China . . .in giving the peace prize to China’s leading dissident – the Norwegian Nobel Committee provided a strong reminder: The world expects China to start acting as a responsible global leader. That means embracing human rights and political freedoms

-"It warned Norway’s government that relations would suffer..."

-"a group of 1,000 Japanese young people to the Shanghai World Expo, a visit that had been canceled by China after maritime collisions"

Ohg. Come on China, grow up! You are acting like a little kid. I would expect stuff like that from the NK who cries for anything, but from you??? Come on! Like "semperfi" posted above, time to "start acting as a responsible global leader".

from an IHT article properly titled "Wife Arrested After Visiting Nobel Winner":

"In Beijing, Ms. Liu’s telephone and Internet communication has been cut off and state security officers are not allowing her to contact friends or the media, the statement said. Nor can she leave her house except in a police car, according to the group. Her brother’s phone has also been “interfered with,” the statement said."

Guess what comes next? .. She goes to Norway (or sends someone there) to pick up the price and the money ... and then both is ripped out of her hands by government henchmen.

NK is a barking dog without teeth. If it wasn't for China, NK had long been defeated and transformed to something more human by a SK/US alliance. China on the other hand is a dog with many teeth who starts barking louder and louder!

that is great! imagine how many sweet potatoes you can buy with that.

Liu’s wife has said she hopes to go to Norway to collect the Nobel medal and its prize money of 10 million Swedish kronor (about $1.5 million) if he cannot

It warned Norway’s government that relations would suffer, even though the Nobel committee is an independent organization.

Norway and China are planning to have talks of a free trade agreement between the 2 countries. I find it hypocritical of Norway to condemn China yet wanting to continue doing business. China should scrap the free trade agreement or better yet Norway should. Until it does that, this prize has little meaning. Condemn China but keep doing business with them. If there are countries which don't need China as trading partners it is the Nordic countries which got a strong economy and is not dependent on the Chinese one to survive. This year's Peace Prize will be like all others, just a feel good prize with little substance.

Thanks for these informative lessons in the refinements of political repression. Someone ought to compile them into a textbook.

    .

Condemn China but keep doing business with them

Condemnation of China is for its DISREGARD for human rights, its denial of freedoms - ( like freedom of speech, freedom of religion) -, its abject indifference to the dehumanizing impact of its predatory capitalism, AND is CLAWING territory from SOVEREIGN countries , like India. . . The western world will not remain silent with regard to a double standard set by China . . .PERHAPS boycotting or implementing sanctions might be a way to tighten the noose around China. CHINA NEEDS the west.

In the message, she called for public pressure over her detention.

see if the Nobel Committee can consider and award a Special Peace Award to her also !

I hate any society that wants the benefits of democracy, but show the behavior of tyranny. You must take the good with the bad which China is unwilling to do.

Sure we have nothing to fear from China becasue they are an economic powerhouse that has reformed. Maybe some of the China appologists need this little reminder that China is stil a 1 party police state.

The Chinese govt continues to pour gasoline on the fire in the hopes of putting it out. They really need a better public relations campaign. Or maybe they thing a public retaliation campaign is better?

and yet we bask in the glow of cheap plastic and how every bottle and appliance is made and built in China. We are not blameless but are actively reinforcing China's behaviour. if we had any class we'd stop propping up a regime that sells away its human rights for a $4 hair dryer. That is, if we both to care.

I wonder what "crime" Mrs Lui has committed that caused the despots to place her under house arrest? Boycott Chinese goods.

I posted this in another thread already, but good luck finding things that aren't made in China. I don't want to support fascist China, but finding products not made there is extremely difficult.
