How can one really party in such a dictatorship country? Let your hairdown, get plastered and you may find yourself assassinated the next day.

"Kim Jong Il brought dancers at the “Arirang” mass games to tears" Guess he should have showered first.

“Our people take pride in the fact that they are blessed with great leaders from generation to generation,” said Yang Hyong Sop, a member of the powerful political bureau of the Central Committee of the Workers’ Party.

Did Yang really use the word ‘blessed’? This seems strange when one considers the source and the nature of the regime. I would like to see the Korean for myself. Perhaps young dictator Kim will survive more than two years if he is ruthless enough and gives China no reason for wanting to get rid of him.

Yes, the North Korean regime holds a big fat juicy party, while the regular poor, hungry North Korean citizens work in the cold rain like slaves to their dictators. With Big Brother China looking over little North Korea with such warm, tender eyes??

Hermit kingdom North Korea seems to have discovered an inexhaustible supply of terror by which to intimidate its population.

They asked for foreign aid so that they could afford the popcorn and confetti.

And the invitations all said BYOB.

Freak show. Why does China prop them up?

MisterCreosote - Because, at one point during the Korean War, MacArthur wanted to nuke his way into China.

Yes, the North Korean regime holds a big fat juicy party, while the regular poor, hungry North Korean citizens work in the cold rain like slaves to their dictators.

Elbud, try to see the silver lining in this for the North Korean people. A third Kim leader means a third national holiday based on the Kim dynasty during which the people get to eat a little better. Maybe even a little meat will be rationed out.

This year’s rendition of the Arirang performance underlined the Kim family legacy,

Funny how they like to say places like the US and the rest of the world are corrupt, and that they stand for the "workers" yet none of the "workers" get a chance to participate in running the country, only the "elite" few who are pretty much born into their position. The same can be said for that other "workers paradise" Cuba, where Castro's brother is in charge now.

I say, if they have enough money to throw parties, they have enough to feed their country. Cut off aid now and let them fend for their own.

I couldn't agree with you more!! Let them stand on their own!!

Father and son should have put on their top hats and did a little song and dance. That would have brought tears to the masses.

Was the party like this? ... search for "North Korean People's Army Funky Get Down Juche Party" on YouTube (silly JT doesn't allow URLs pfff).

Why do they need our aid if they can afford so many weapons and such a huge army? Or am I missing something?

Freak show. Why does China prop them up?

Because a reunification of North and South Korea would bring the US (via their South Korean alliances) right to the doorstep of China, and all the complications that come with such a thing (again, from China's perspective). It's simple self-interest that they prop up the NK puppet masters.

I couldn't agree with you more!! Let them stand on their own!!

Except what will happen, as has happened before, is the general populace (North Korean versions of you and I -- albeit heavily indoctrinated), end up suffering while the political elite remain well fed and esconced in their ivory towers. All the while, the NK propaganda machine demonizes the outside world and channels the anger of the people away from where the true responsibility lies. Your simple answers are not so satisfactory for a more complex situation, now are they?

Stalinist North Korea's new leader General Kim Jong Un, another European-educated dictator.

Wiki relates that the Japanese national who was the regime's personal sushi chef was on pretty good terms with the heir. The pathetic spectacle of Asian nepotism is alive and well:

"If power is to be handed over then Jong-un is the best for it. He has superb physical gifts, is a big drinker and never admits defeat."

"frenzy of applause" TSS should have been a sniper there. whats with the "foreign dignitaries and the international press" always there!? what happen to chuche? they want to be "independent" but then want to always show how great things are there to the outside world. Brianless hypocrites

political elite remain well fed and esconced

Shaolin7, they can't stay that way for very long. Sooner or later, they will have to bring whoever is in power into the fact that they don't have enough even for the elite to live, and something has to be done.

No matter what happens, the average NK is going to get screwed.
