Crocodile numbers have boomed across Australia’s northern tropics since they became a protected species under federal law in 1971, and they pose an increasing threat to humans.

Time to revisit that if they are targeting humans.

targeting humans.

Crocs occasionally target humans, who choose to ignore the thousands of warning signs EVERYWHERE in that area. No need to shoot them to near extinction yet again, just because of the odd reckless tourist. News is just coming in that the victim was a British tourist - Rest in Peace.

Ouch....

the crocs were there before humans and pose little threat when aware of their behavior. Tourists need to be knowledgable when in areas of danger. Locals are aware.

Australia is full of dangers. Crocodiles are only one.

People need to be aware of the critters that live where they happen to be at any given time & make decisions accordingly, man is part of nature not separate from it, watch your step folks!

I can't believe they did not at least check a little about the place and its reputation before swimming there late at night. What a horrible way to go, too. RIP.

The title made it sound like the woman failed in her responsibility to save her friend. I find her brave for even trying.

They still haven't found her. A local MP blamed 'human stupidity' and I have to agree with that. Although they weren't locals they are aussies (Lithgow, Blue Mountains nsw) and should have known better.

Dark + water + crocs territory= late swim at your own peril.

Well i had a !2 foot long Crock as a pet A hungry little feller Loved Chooks Hated Brooms and he also loved Humans in my Time He never eat anybody as Was fed too many Chooks He was the best Dead chook recycler any where . So when in the wild parts of Orstralia Don't Feed the crocks Humans, only the Dead chooks, Why else would one Swim in an area Warning of Crocodile Danger other than to feed the crocks.

Time for tourist to read signs and believe them. Whatever enters the territory of a croc is food, not 'human' to them. I cannot feel sorry for such people anymore. They put themselves in danger.

Swimming at 10:30pm up there.....? Not a good idea.

It's not the friends fault for being unable to save the other. This is nature they were dealing with. Sad, but this is an advocate for the Darwinism award. It amazes me how some people just lack common sense in certain situations. Or were they drinking?
