Gosh, the least Britton coud have done was bring some snacks for the poor starving mountain lion. How inconsiderate.

This sounds like another summer show for Spike TV: Animals vs. power tools. They've already done 'The Deadliest Warrior' and an animal vs. animal show.
This seems like the logical progression.
Seriously, BZ to the Marine for having the stones to protect his family like that. I have no doubt his Marine training aided him greatly.

Poor lion. 45k sounds pretty small for a full-grown male.
Starving, slashed with a chain saw, chased round the mountains then shot. Lousy way to go.
I hope Mr Britton got his small puncture wound seen to, some pumas are apparently infected with rabies. He did well to protect his family, but it might have been better if he hadn't taken his family into lion country in the first place.

yeah, a chainsaw would pretty much take care of it

He did bring them. The problem was that he did not give them.
Taka313- "Seriously, BZ to the Marine for having the stones to protect his family like that."
I was under the distinct impression that he was protecting himself. Do you think we could inflate this to "protecting his country" too and give him a medal? I loves my hero stories!
I am with cleo. My sympathy is primarily for the mountain lion.

Cleo- "He did well to protect his family, but it might have been better if he hadn't taken his family into lion country in the first place." Really? You're going to ding him for taking his family into the OUTDOORS? Where DANGEROUS animals actually LIVE? Lets all just stay indoors and away from all those nasty things and never experience what its really like to be human.
And another thing to everyone, where at in the story does it say he was protecting his family? Let me help you out on this one, it doesn't. So quit saying that "he protected his family".

No, I think she is dinging him for going too far off into Shoshone National Forest with two toddlers in tow. I cannot say for sure, but it does not sound like an established camp site that a mountain lion would avoid, but rather a remote location where mountain lions range. And he and his wife brought toddlers?

Yeah, really. Substitute 'old Japanese codger out looking for mushrooms' for 'former US Marine chopping wood' and 'bear' for 'mountain lion', and you'll find the thread full of folk telling you how wrong the bloke was to be where he was and doing what he was doing.

He was in the Shoshone National Forest people ! Welcome to life outside of Japan, yes where wild animals and man just may encounter one another. I'm with complexpoet on this one. Seeing wild animals in their natural environment has it's risks... but it sure is a helluva lot better than seeing them in cages like here in Japan !

It doesn't sound like that at all. A starving animal isn't going to avoid anything, it's going to go where it thinks there is food.
There's nothing wrong with bringing toddlers camping, people do it all the time. What's wrong with letting kids experience the outdoors? 8 cases of aggressive mountain lion behavior (not even attacks) over 10 years hardly seems like a danger that would cause one to say "Stay at home!"

Can we get an "edit post" function?

There's nothing wrong with taking toddlers camping. There's nothing wrong with going into the great outdoors and doing outdoor things.
The fact remains that this man chopping wood in the forest led directly to an animal being killed. 8 cases of aggressive mountain lion behavior (not even attacks) over 10 years, pawatan tells us, and this guy does something that causes a mountain lion to jump on him. He was lucky it didn't jump on one of his toddlers.

Whoa up their hoss, yer stretchin the story mighty thin ! Seems to me that it was the fact the mountain lion was starving is what set of this chain of events ! I suggest you take your complaint up with mother nature ! Maybe she can knock a few deer down with a bolt of lightening or something... sheesh !

Quote: Wyoming officials have documented only eight cases of mountain lions acting aggressively toward humans over the last decade.
So, in five neighboring states that would be erm,... eight by 5, equals 40 documented attacks by mountain lions in the last 10 years, or 200 attacks in the last 50 years... that's actually quite a lot.

Jeez Cleo, he didn't do anything to cause it to jump him except be present. The animal was STARVING, and if you'd keep in mind that animal is gonna do whatever it can to try and survive especially when it gets desperate. Unfortunately for it, it was too weak to catch decent prey and it was also pretty young too and might not have had enough experience or strength to gain some decent territorial hunting grounds.

And we know that because......all the (word-for-word identical) reports say that he says that the lion pounced at him unprovoked. This the word of a man who leaves his wife and two small children alone in what he knows is lion country, while he goes off to cut wood......Yeah, we'd better just take his word for it.

Your attempts to escape the rhetorical corner you've painted yourself into are endlessly amusing, cleo. Yes, let's not take the man's word for it. What do really about , anyway? Way to see through the Matrix code of reality. Certainly the beast would have lived forever happily but for this thoughtless man's actions. Next you'll have us believe that fish are the kittens of the sea.

That's pretty close. I wonder what's going on with the wild animal's natural habitat out there.

Looks to me he was in an established campsite. It would be difficult for anyone to hike deep into the woods with two small children, camping gear and a chainsaw.

I take it you don't spend much time camping, Cleo. Mountain Lion territory is basically the entire American West. Mountain Lions (as the article, not me, said) are not aggressive and are very rarely seen. They aren't lions like African lions. It's not irresponsible at all, and literally millions of people go camping in "Lion Country" every year.

Well said! And as someone else mentioned earlier, the lion was starving, so it was desperate to get something in its stomach, regardless of what type of animal (yea humans are animals too) it was.
And so what if he wasn't in an established campsite? Since when do you need amenities to go camping? There is nothing wrong at all for picking a spot out in the middle of the woods to pitch a tent for a couple days. People do it all the time, especially in that region of the US (Montana, Wyoming, Idaho, etc.). A very good friend of mine camps throught out Montana all the time (he lives there) and camps wherever, not to mention its Grizzly country there too. Its called Backpacking and being a real human connected with nature. Sorry if I seem overly abrasive, I just get really irritated when people blow things out of proportion.
