But when it mattered most, he fell short.

    What a joke!

Mmm I love Messi, but I don't know if he deserved this....it's more a way to honor the man, than a prize for being the best player in this tournament.

Messi the best player of this tournament? What a joke! At times he wasn't even the best player in the Argentine team.

hah what a farce. Surely there were much better players in this worldcup. James Rodriguez, f.e.

and the glove should've gone to Krul, even if he was only in for penalties :P

I agree that Messi should not have received the Golden Boot. Well, since he didn't get the cup - at least he got something to take home. There were , however, better players than him! But the Golden Glove to Krul? You must be kidding! For a "one-time-event"? Neuer deserved this honor, because he was and is one of the world's top goal-keepers!

Didn't USA goaltender Tim Howard make a WC record number of saves in one match? Seems like that bit of athletics should have garnered him the title of top tournament player.

    klausdorth note the sarcasm?

And yes agree with Texas, the US keeper is one of the persons who deserved that glove :)

Neuer definitely deserved the Golden Glove award, but I'm not sure about Messi getting the Golden Boot award. There is no denying he is one of the best players out there, but didn't Klose get like 16 goals this tournament? or was it Meuller?

If Netherlands would have made the final, Robben could be the Golden Boot player.

Costa Rica's Navas should have won the Golden Glove award but they have selected Neuer maybe because he recorded the most clean sheets and he did not make any major mistakes. Navas, Tim Howard, Ochoa were the best goalkeepers in this tournament.

Messi didn't get the golden boot, James Rodriguez did. He probably should have gotten Messi's Golden Ball award too, but since he already got one award and Messi's team made it to the final, they gave it to Messi. Its often used as kind of a consolation. Klose scored 16 overall, only 2 this tournament. Meuller might break his record some day though.

    Choked, plain and simple.

Sunday’s final, was named the Golden Boot player of the tournament.

Messi was named the Golden Ball player! Not the Golden Boot player. For winning the title of Golden Boot, the player have to score maximum goal such as five or six goals. He did not score much goal.

Golden ball is more about the consolation rather than achievement. Such as honorable degree for someone who has never been to university for his celebrity status .

Golden Boot title belong to Columbia player James Rodriguez who had scored six goals in 2014 WC. He is only 22 years old. If he was not fouled by Brazilian cowboys, he may scored more. Congratulation to Colombian boy!

You don't know your keepers. Neuer is revolutionizing the position. He just doesn't sit back in the net and wait for shots to come to him. He goes after balls that are even outside the box.

@zenpun, there golden boot is for the player who scores the most goals in the tournament. There is no maximum. In the last 30 years or so 6 has usually been enough to win it (or share it) but I think Ronaldo managed 8 in Japan/Korea.

Yeh, they need to adjust how they ref that though. Higuain got completely flattened by Neuer, yet the foul was called on Higuain! Going for the ball is fine, but if you have to go through the player...

    @ADK99

Sorry! What I meant was maximizing the goals(most goals scored as you said) through out the tournament from single player. However there is no limit for maximum.

You are right! Modern games were more defensive and scored less goals. There was a magic moment in 1958 from Sweden player called as Just Fontaine who scored 13 goals during the tournament. He was a extraordinary of mankind and proud history of Golden Boot movement.

@zenpun - you're right, Just Fontaine's record is amazing, and will probably never be beaten!

Messhi player of the tournament? Please. Don't insult us.

For me the player of the tournament was Arjen Robben. Don't understand why Lionel Messi was chosen.

    Because he didn't flop I guess :-p

Also because he was on hand to receive the award.

Messi looked pissed off at the ceremony. His face seemed to be saying I need more help than Lebron. If only I'd had the chances of Higuain and Palacio and we'd be champs.

Messi looked pissed off at the ceremony

Nah they got him to the final, if he scored his chance they would have won. In the end the extra day's rest may have helped Germany. Argentina looked a bit tired at the end. The goal was good but normally the defenders would gobble that up. But credit to Germany's subs for stepping it up. If Aguero and Palacio did anything useful...

In other news, Messi vomited yet again in the first half.

    DaDude

Messi seems to have won out of popularity. It reminds me of the NBA All Star game. Only players people know get voted in even if the player is having a bad season and/or injured.

  • 2

    zichi

He didn't play that well yesterday and looked like any other player, nothing special? Tim Howard gave so much more than Messi?

  • -1

    yabits

You make an excellent point, Zichi.

This argues for the creation of first and second level "All-Tournament" teams. Not individual awards. There are Costa Rican, Mexican, Columbian, Ghanian, Uruguayan and other players worthy of note.

    What do you think?

  • 1

    therougou

He didn't play that well yesterday and looked like any other player, nothing special? Tim Howard gave so much more than Messi?

Its hard for him to look special while having like 4 players defend against him. Plus once Aguero and Palacio came in it looked like Argentina were down a man. Tim Howard had a good game, but many keepers stood out this tournament. Messi won a couple of games and his team got to the final. Probably shouldn't have won this award but its not absurd, either.

  • 1

    zichi

Team awards, yes maybe but individual player awards are right too especially when they get them right like James Rodriguez of Colombia getting the Golden Boot award .

  • 0

    cracaphat

Nah they got him to the final,

He scored 4 of their 8 goals to get to the final, so either he ain't all that or his supporting cast was weak.Or he wasn't able to do a Maradona and carry the team on his own to the ultimate.

  • 0

    ticaile

Navas as way more effective than Neuer.

  • 3

    kickboard

didn't Klose get like 16 goals this tournament?

Oh dear, someone educate this poor lad.

Don't forget Suarez, the "Golden Bite"

  • 1

    therougou

Or he wasn't able to do a Maradona and carry the team on his own to the ultimate.

I'm pretty sure if he was playing in the same age as Maradona, he would carry them easily.
