Japan Earthquake – How to help

As you will undoubtedly be aware of, the northeastern regions of Japan were hit first by one of the largest earthquakes ever and then by a devastating tsunami. We have been publishing a series of articles, covering the event and its aftermath. As part of that, we have also been looking at the different ways you can find information and support.

A list of donation methods

This list of donations and ways to help covers a number of methods by which you can show your support for victims of the earthquake and tsunami. Donations are made through a safe and approved service and can be made both from within Japan and outside the country.

Money Donation

Most services recommend sending money as it will be administered by professionals in the field who can ensure that it is used for exactly the right purpose. However, as we have listed below, there are plenty of other ways to help as well.

Room Donation

Roomdonor. jp, Roomshare Japan, Sparkrelief and Roommate Cafe are all running appeals to people who have spare apartments or individual room space to help house those forced to evacuate.

Supplies Donation

The Tokyo metropolitan government is now accepting relief supplies. The following items will be accepted:

› Supplies for babies
antifebrile sheets (Netsusamasheet) / nappies / wipes / baby lotion / baby oil etc.

› Supplies for the elderly
diapers / nursing care supplies ( wipes, thickener for foods) etc.

› Others
contact lens care products ( cleaning solutions, cases) / pocket warmers (kairo) / sanitary goods / paper cups / kitchen wrap / water

* Please make sure all supplies are packaged in their original boxes or secure bags.
* Food and clothing will not be accepted for the moment.
