With all this talk of global policing, isn't it ironic how closley the Yanks (self-proclaimed glabal sherriff) resemble none other than one of their own...the LAPD.

I'm not sure there are any end results to be happy about in Iraq.

I don't know about rape, but Americans have already been sexually abusing, torturing, and killing Iraqis.

I think too much of the public automatically writes off Middle-Easterns as crazy, and that it's comforting to see some Americans over there, shedding a bit of light into an otherwise dark place. That's what it looks like, so that's why we continue to support it all. We want to see a country where we know we can find a Starbucks or McDonald's while enjoying the local scenery, museums, nature trails, and try some of the local delicacies and booze.

While you and I are sitting at our computers, the war goes on and on.

Same old story. U.S. at war overseas somewhere where the typical American has never been, so doesn't really have any reason to care about, as long as it ends up quiet and more of them died than us.

Willing to fight for freedom? Same old, same old. You don't think "they" are fighting for freedom? Everyone thinks they are fighting for freedom.

Hitler wanted good for his country. He wanted to expand his perfect country. He wanted everyone fed well, every family owning a vehicle. He kissed babies. He made crowds of people happy with his bravado. He made sure his country was up to form. His country was unified with happy thoughts of cleaning up society and spreading the wealth.

Are Americans the most free people in the world? I don't think so. A lot of countries that are not participating in this "killing in the name of freedom" are just as "free" as anyplace else. They're waiting for the U.S. to get over it's superiority complex and put the weapons down.

It doesn't make sense for the U.S. to continue its military presence in Iraq or anywhere. No matter how good intentioned they are, they're actually hurting themselves more than anything.

There are a lot of Iraqis who never asked for their country to be invaded and are wondering why the fcck they have to put up with a military regime which isn't even their own.

In general, Iraq was under bad leadership. We can all agree on that. That caused hell for some people. I have the feeling that the U.S. is just dirt in their scar though. The scars not going to heal until the U.S. accepts that it did what it thought was right, but you can't enforce freedom.

Both sides have to stop the war. Terrorism is a disease, but so is the American military, no matter how many of our happy next-door neighbours are in it.

Americans need to come home and heal. Deal with things on the homefront. Look at newer fuel options instead of fighting for a disappearing one.

The need for an enemy is a strong one.

Imagine what the U.S. could be doing on its own at home. Imagine the truer dignity that would come from losing that need to show force and getting on with life.

If Iraq's such a problem, let it self-destruct.

Who knows? Maybe if the U.S. leaves Iraq alone and gives it space, it will actually get to the point where it will apologize for past problems, it will have looked at its own problems and fixed them, and one day will just be a neutral place.

The message seems to be "Get out of our country." Why not? Staying there will just breed more violence from them at this point. Hasn't the U.S. had enough of its buttons pushed?

Mutually Assured Destruction (MAD) assumes the DPRK has the potential to destroy America.

Best estimates are that the DPRK could have produced five weapons more or less.

Their missile platforms and the huge bombs produced with their 1950's era technology do not mate together.

Their missiles are also not accurate enough to hit a US city.

They could smuggle the bombs into the US and conceivably take out five cities but that is hardly the "Assured Destruction" of the USA. We have a lot more than five cities.

On the other hand, the USA could destroy every major city in the DPRK with about 2% of our existing inventory and have plenty left over for critics.

There is no such thing as "MAD" between the USA and the DPRK.

Were we to actually destroy all major DPRK cities, China and Russia would likely complain but they would not start a nuclear shooting war with the USA over a third country.

As for President Bush...I support a hard line with the DPRK as opposed to paying blackmail to make them behave.

If it really looks like they have these weapons, we should strike everything that remotely resembles a nuke-related and missile site with conventional weapons.

No ground troops...just take out the nuke facilities, politburo and presidential residences.

Then wait and see what kind of government pops up next.

The Romans called it a punitive strike.

Flaworly, USA once left Iraq in Gulf War. Result? Saddam killed almost a million it own people.
You want it again? NO WAY. We pay our lives for other's freedom. If we'll leave now- Iraq will be in chaos and blood 10,000 times more than now. Assenisation is a dirty job, but somebody should do it.
Bush did right thing. Just feel sorry that he didn't include NK in immediate targets. NK is biggest threat to planet Earth than anyone else. I'm voting for creating International Legion, which will not belong to any country, but will strike any hostile regime without mercy. Who will decide level of hostility? No need. It's obvious. A few hundreds of former "special forces" guys from different countries can be a deadly power for jerks in NK.
GeneW, you're absolutely right - just nuke facilities, politbureau and top army personnel. There always will be a few good guys, who will create a new Government, they just need a help.

What's "Assenisation?" and why is it a "dirty job?"

Does it have something to do with asses? Maybe that's why it's dirty.

"I'm voting for creating International Legion, which will not belong to any country, but will strike any hostile regime without mercy."

Not in your lifetime will you have that chance.

Praising President Bush for everything he's done wrong in the world is certainly the preferred sport of right-wing America-haters like you, but surely don't expect me to let you get away with it.

Only in Geneland does MAD equate with only direct threat to the Homeland.

For the wiser and saner, the DPRK's threat of nuclear attack againt our ally Japan is a threat against maintaining American security and power interests. The same goes for every other nation within missle-shot of NK.

If the US wishes to maintain our array of bi-lateral agreements with South Korea, Japan, and by extension Taiwan, the Phillipines, Indonesia, etc, the US must take that nations security interests in to accout.

Simply stated, Japan and S. Korea will boot out the bases if America is stupid enough to pursue a policy which allows for a "limited" nuclear echange with either of them involved. And that would be the death-blow to American power in North East Asia. Hello China.

I suppose you are talking about the base thread.

My thoughts are that the bases are a VERY complicated issue, wrapped up in history, politics, international relations, racism, bla bla bla bla bla. Most discussion at JT reflects the greater partisanship and ignorance rampid throughout Japan, Okinawa, the US and the US military personal.
