US troops will be withdrawn from Iraq at the request of the newly-elected government, President George Bush said today.

Why the double standard for Okinawa? Because Iraq has proven to be a misadventure and Okinawa continue to be a cash cow?

NAHA — Two Diet members from Okinawa Prefecture said Saturday they plan to visit the United States next week to request an immediate closure of the U.S. Marine Corps Futemma Air Station in central Okinawa.

Watch out folks sounds like these folks are going on a party trip to spend some of your hard earned cash.

They should be ignored as they are not representatives from the National level of government, they are from the local level. That would be the same as a state senator from one of the midwest states coming to Japan to try to negotiate agricultural issues.
Let the National level do the negotiating with the US Govt.

Another boondoggle by corrupt Okinawan Prefectural politicians who know that only Japan's Federal Government can modify an international agreement/treaty between Japan and the USA.

Get back to Okinawa and fix the potholes and find jobs for the almost 10% of Okinawans now out of work.

These chicks are nothing but Communists

Close all the bases, disarm, let China smash everyone and rule the world.

Yeah, that's a good idea - at a time when China is arming to the teeth, let's CLOSE our bases. REAL good idea.

Lenin was right after all - the west is being "put to sleep".

I hope you all have a large supply of anti-radiation pills at your disposal because you're going to need them...

Why would they do that?

they will have to bring aides, translators, mistress, etc. probably about 20 people will go and sit in a 5 star hotel. they will get about a 10 minute meeting with someone who will ignore them.

okinawa need's the US thugs. so does the rest of the little girl thinking world (i.e canada and france).

Then, China will have a free hand to "liberate" its neigbors one by one.

the same way that the usa justifies having a huge nuclear arsenal on hairtrigger alert to fight a final war with....Russia? Times change. Time for america to get out of Japan.

"Times change. Time for america to get out of Japan."

I have no objection about American withdrawal from Japan. I just can't see it happen realistically while China is arming itself to the teeth along with NK nuclear ambition. If America withdraw, Japan will re-arm which is understandable given historical rivalries among the neighbors. Maybe, a nuclear Japan will emerge to counter her giant neighbors growing military threat if America disengage.

uh, hello - the situation with China was helped along quite a bit by the US.

Just like with the issues of arming Osama, the US is going to pretend it didn't have anything to do with a situation that they want to pretend just sprouted out of nowhere without their help.

Could China really militarize as easily without those trade agreements that had US lawmakers drooling over the idea of cheap labor and selling "1.4 billion toothbrushes"?

duh people. Please, dislodge your head from whence the sun don't shine and get some oxygen to that brain!

And then, there is the issue of the Taiwan Strait, the policies towards which change with each incoming administration in the White House (to sell or not to sell WEAPONS - Are people gonna remember that King George the first sold Taiwan planes and didn't help that situation of tension at all? of course, Clinton was pretty buddied up with some questionable parties in China too - but hey, Americans more or less feel the entitlement to do whatever they want for a quick buck). The Taiwan Strait issue doesn't affect the people of Mainland japan (the naichya, beware the naichya!) as much as it would affect Okinawa.

But lookie at all the fanatical right winger-dingers getting hysterical over Chinese.

Next thing you know they'll be tossing jokes around on this board about the so-called "sankokujin" who are sooooo fearsome. Kind of reminds me of a comment made by a governor of a major city about the Koreans and how they are prone to riots.

I love all the racists on this board who don't live in areas emburdened with 75% of the total load, who think that Okinawa needs national approval to proceed in its best interest. That is simply hilarious folks! It is tokyo and the mainland japanese who continue to colonize Okinawa and then scream and whine when the Okinawan people actually try to assert their human rights.

I daresay, I think it belies your cowardice. I don't think you would have the guts to exhaust every diplomatic avenue and option available to you, if you were in this situation.
