"Anyways finishing in the top 10 in an international competition, in my books, is OK. I think you are getting caught in the media hype that says without a medal you failed."
I'm sure the athletes don't feel the same, and wouldn't like you speaking for them. And you'd make a great coach: "come on guys, atta way, a 2-80 season is fine by me, just give it your all!"

No wonder Japanese athletes are having a problem competing in the winter games. They don't know what games they are competing in.
Why is it Japanese media consistently call the games the "Turin" games, while the rest of the world refer to the Torino Games?
Strange indeed!
It's Torino folks!!!

Japan should get some medals if they introduce snow judo or ice shoji
| I feel bad for Miki Ando in all of this. | |

She is the face of the 2006 J-Olympics.
When she fails to medal (not a very bold prediction there), she will be the one remembered for failing.
Talk to any average person. The majority will tell you they are following figure skating this olympics because they think Japan will medal in figure skating.
Then ask these same people if they have been following figure skating in other countries to gauge the competition.
Then....watch as a pair of eyes quickly glaze over.
All they know is that Miki Ando is on every third commercial and every other olympic news story.
That's a hell of a lot of pressure for a kid who finished 6th in the qualifiers.
I wish her well but I don't think she has a snowballs chance for a medal and if Japan has an "0"fer at the olympics, I think she will be the face of Japan's failure. That's really not fair to the poor kid.
Peace,
Taka

Now that Duke... was spoken by a true Canadian. One that is on the verge of having to eat crow over fairly inadequate performance by his own OLy team... Canada. Funny how you missed the opportunity to slap one of yer own !
Just watched the ladies short program. Miki goes out and once again, and diplays a nice keester, unfortunately in was in the midst of an error... how can you ram into the walls like that ? Is that part of yer routine ? Mammamia ! Looks like the J'S might finally get a medal though... Arakawa will be in the hunt for the bronze. Look at the table loaded with a buncha unknown young Americans there at the top. Could be a fun ending !

OK now a reason to cheer for one of the Japanese athletes. Suguri finishes her short program by chattering in English... thats right in English ! to her mom and friends back home ? In any case, this is a bold and major step for Japanese athletes. From Nomo, who was just too dumb, to Ichiro, who is just too arrogant... bring on this breath of fresh air. Go Suguri ! Now there, see, thats all it takes to make the chimp happy... a real effort ! Still wanna slap the NHK announcers in the pie hole though for their obviously home town rooting for the J skaters. Look gramps... be a pro, just announce the event for those of us who are hard of seeing. Don't go squeeling and worst of all don't go shouting "perfect", when you obviously don't know what you are talking about. Your perfect had Suguri in first, actual scoring had her in third ! So shaddup !

Why does J-land do badly in sports? Maybe cuz they're bad in sports? Everyone knows J-lads don't measure up. Or maybe Urko will be tellin' us it's cuz J-land doesn't have many mountains or snow?

Blimey the winter olympics is dull. No wonder no one watches it, even here; it's dull. Who on earth is actually going to watch these boring crud events. Downhill skiing's all very well, but some of these events are mindnumbingly tedious. The reason Brits don't win is not the lack of snow, it's how bleedin' bored they get.
Ahhhh, spoken like a true Brit.
But seriously, the japanese fans should be uspet they are getting a lousy ROI.

Now there's an image. How about team pursuit sumo luge?! They might have to widen the course. Wouldn't want a bottle-neck when a sumo tumbles.
In four years, if the JOC allows her to, Ando is going to be dynamite in the Olympics. Although I'm afriad they'll say she 'failed' in Torino therefore can't play in Vancouver.

JOC should be gettin calls ! As should the Canadian Olympic Committee ! Face it, 33 mill, with only winter sports to concentrate on ? You should be doin a helluva lot better. At least the J's dominate the Judo tourney come every Oly. What the hell does Canada do ? Flounder about in the hockey tournement ! The US has dozens of sports pullin it's athletes apart, NFL, NBA, NHL. MLB, Tennis, Golf, MLS, hell even rodeo ! But Canada ? Nothin' but hockey ! Thats it, nothing more to talk about ! Japan is about the same. Judo ! You better do well in Judo or the fans will riot ! Again, the USA is just amazing. Not only all those other sports but they also do excellent in the Olympics and all the other world tournements ! Deal with it world ! The proof is in the pudding !
