Since they added HDMI to the lower end version aswell and cut the price of it, I'm thinking of ordering one from Japan. PS3 is supposed to have region free gaming so I should be able to save 200~€ by importing. Damn us europeans for getting ripped off by prices. I can't wait to have one though.

No price drop in the US or Europe, just Japan.

I hope Sony has a ton of cash. They just increased their loss on each console by $100. Multiply that by the numbers of core systems to be released in Japan and you have losses in the tens of millions just from this announcement alone.

I am unsure of how much a "ton of cash" is. Your tens of millions is correct though with 500,000 units available initially.

Microsoft has upped the ante with an external HD drive (20,790Y) and 1080p (software update). = Being second out of the gate has it's costs, but so does being first (MS power supply problem). Expect a battle.

True those old Plasmas are not going for much now and most are not 1080p.

Are they really region free? That sounds farfetched. I have a japanese PS2. It might make sense for me to get a North American PS3, since it's cheaper to order the games used from Amazon and it takes forever for the foreign titles to make it to Japan. I'm still waiting for GTA San Andreas here.

You are behind the times on GTA. GTA S.A. is bargain bin <$10 now (new). -And you have proven the region-free point.

Grand Theft Auto: Liberty City Stories is the new one, you may just want to wait for the Trilogy Now or GTA classics to come out.

Nothing wrong with clawing thru the bargin bins. Hey, -Any old Dreamcast games in there? Need a flashlight? The good ones are always on the bottom so don't be afraid to jump in and dig for it.

Why PS3 (or X360)? When you can get a new Xbox or PS2 for ~$100 and games are $10 or less. If you can wait a few years so should your kids.

ok ..region ?

another great statement from the dumbass that is kutaragi...

"Sony does not plan to lower the retail price of PS3 in North America and Europe. The reason is that people in both regions were very well accepted the prices, but in Japan the feedback was not supportive, so Sony lowered the price by 20% in Japan"

sooo....hes insulting the US and Europeans because we are so dumb that we are willing to pay 20% more than the Japanese?...come on all you Sony lovers, even you can't take that comment without wondering how much trouble Sony are in with the PS3? right?

at this rate kutaragi will be developing Sony washing machines next year

Yep. Found some top-level xbox360 games for Y1,980 in a bin at Bic camera recently. I don't care if it's not popular here, it's still the only next-generation console out and so has no rivals, let alone superiors.

Too bad

This announcement wasn't directed towards us North American consumers, cause I'm bend on getting one.

The Canadian price for this baby for all I know will be approximately $600-$800 cdn. That still beats buying a Blu-ray player alone at $1300 cdn, let alone a Samsung Blu-ray player.

Greatness

I already thought the system specs are spectacular. I am planning to buy the system when it is relased. However this news that it is going to be even cheaper. It is just wonderful! =) They put into the systems. The purpose of this system is worth the purchase. Not to mention the graphics are amazing!!!!
