"Yes, there may be a link. But it will require careful study to determine how to verify this. Get back in touch with us in another four years".

Why can't parents learn to talk with there kids about their problems. And you need to start early. I tell my kid what to expect at school, life, everything. And I make it clear that if they need to talk about anything, sex, grades, drugs, alcohol, health problems, you name it, to then just spit it out.
This whole society is screwed. The mom knew there was a problem. For some reason the kid was trying too hard at basketball (probably pushed hard to do well by the parents). She couldn't hack it so she smurfed herself.
Don't kids know there are alternatives. Parents should let kids know that not being the basketball star doesn't mean you are a failure. Suicide = failure. There is no afterlife, when you are dead, that is it, game over, you lose. If you are really unhappy with life, then yes, suicide might be the solution. But at 14, I would think there is a pretty big world out there.

Not necessarily - it's more likely to have been down to pressure from the other kids in the basketball club. It's not about becoming a basketball star - this sort of bullying seems not to be at all unusual in school club activities.

Japanese Boards of Education are worthless. Having worked at one in the past, I can guarantee they don't give a rat's ass about bullying until something like this happens. Then it's a mad scramble to show everyone how sorry they are and how they'll be pro-active in addressing the problem next time -- until things 'die' down that is. Then it's back to business as usual. Like making sure schools actually teach all the required subjects necessary for students to graduate.
Oh, wait. They don't do that either.

she had been training hard to get better at basketball and that she may have been ridiculed by other club members
Ridicule the very essence of wa. Honestly people really run each other down here at all levels. Family members run each other down and thats where it starts. Havent seen Grandma in a while well you probably wont want to because the first thing she will likely tell you is that you've gained weight. Dont bother watching tv with them either as the nasty comments dont stop there either such as calling a fat singer a pig. And on it goes just ask any of your Japanese friends.
Think you are exempt from ridicule because in your mind you are a foreign god? Think again. To your face your coworkers may be nice but guaranteed there are some people running you down behind your back. Think Im paranoid then you must not understand enough Japanese to know when you are being ridiculed right to your face or within earshot such as on the train.
Yes the nail that sticks out will be hammered down... by ridicule. Of course not all Japanese are like this and this kind of thing goes on everywhere but here it seems to be more accepted. People dont really speak up to say dont do that because either they are doing the same thing and its the pot calling the kettle black. Or people are afraid that if they do say stop it then the ridicule will be turned on them.

There is really only one way to deal with this as the schools just don't want to know.
That's with the perpetrators themselves. Now I'm not advocating attacks, but to let them know there are people who will take the issue back to them.
I knew of one single woman who had a terrible time with her son being bullied
in junior high school. As a last resort, she found the creeps and said; " I promise you this; I will follow you wherever you go. You'll never hold down a job as I'll be at your company regularly and telling all and sundry what your real character is. You won't keep a partner, as I'll warn her and her friends of your past. " etc. you get the idea.
She said it worked....

What the hell is a 'probe' needed for? It seems pretty clear to me, and just about everyone with a head on their shoulders, there is a DIRECT connection between the bullying and the suicide. The longer people in the education system deny it and cook the books so their school looks 'great', the more their charges are going to kill themselves. It's a very sad thing really... sadder of course that young people are taking their lives, but very sad that it's in part due to the irresponsibility of their caretakers.

It seems in Japan that even if you leave a suicide note reading something like 'bullies have made my life unbearable, that's why I am going to kill myself', there's still a need to investigate whether bullying had any connection with the subsequent hanging...

Ya never know, could be a copycat suicide.

Why can't parents learn to talk with there kids about their problems.
This is an important question for modern day Japan. There is a generation of Japanese young people who don't know what their parents do for a living, don't know their hobbies or occupations. On the other side there is a generation of parents who know very little about their own children and expect schools and teachers to know everything about their children.
In this case, once the school was told about the possibility of bullying they had a responsibility to act quickly. I heard this morning that the teachers, whom the parents spoke to about their daughter's possible bullying, did not report their conversation to their principal. In fact, the principal was evidently not made aware of the situation until after the girl had committed suicide.

This Country is every last man for himself. It's a real survival test mentally and emotionally. Even for foreigners.

I think Gifu Prefecture should investigating whether lack of proper sleep led to the suicide last week. The girl was probably unstable because she was only sleeping 6 hours a night so she could go to school early for basketball practice. Prolonged sleep problems cause mental problems. Her lack of sleep and proper brain and mental development made her unstable.
| was bullying relating to this girl's suicide? | |
